The cornerstone of belief is faith. It's the foundation of the whole construct of a religion (at least from the non-anthropological side of a religion*). Faith cannot be proven by logic or scientific analysis, only held. And examining belief frequently changes it; changes the foundation on which this very impressive structure has been wrought. If you are someone who has invested heavily in this structure then you want to try and ensure that the foundations on which you build are as stable as possible. Many people forget that "catholic" means "the one true," which is why throughout most of the history of the Church they brutally repressed dissident views (at least until the invention of the printing press and corruption in the Church politic allowed the rise of effective "protest"). Theology used to be the exclusive provenance of trained theologicians, just like correcting the foundations of a physical cathedral was a job for skilled masons.
So the most dangerous question you can ever ask is "why," because it often undermines the ( ... )
