The floor was under the nurse, but under George…was nothing.
He saw George’s hand too far from the railing, his feet too far over the edge.
Then the world moved, George’s face changed from shock to panic to fear as he fell.

After a couple of years Alex had opened up about his past and had told George about his father. That week George had learned the secret behind every scar that marked Alex. The beer bottle across his leg for crashing his bike, the cigar burn on his back for not getting the trash out in time and the rib he’s half missing because he missed the bus to school in the eighth grade. With each mark George hated Alex’s parents more and more. But one mark Alex didn’t explain. The faint line hidden by his hair a reminder of a cracked skull that Alex wouldn’t explain. So George waited and one day Alex did tell him. Told him about that day he got the scar, the day he fell into a coma for a week, the day his father took a hammer to his son’s head, the day he slipped and told his father that he had a crush not just on the captain of the cheerleaders but on the captain of the football team too.

Like right now, some kid has cancer, won’t make it six months and O’Malley has him laughing and playing airplane in the sunshine. Maybe it’s because he’s such a kid himself they think he’s one of them. And maybe that’s why I love him.
