Wake up to attack

Jun 20, 2009 10:59

This morning I woke up and made some breakfast, took two Ibuprofen for a headache, and sat down to catch up with my online world. Before finishing my morning facebook and LJ read I had seen three different anti-feminist posts.

I kid you not.

I find myself slandered based on my sex online regularly, and often by people who should know better. ( Read more... )

Online, rarely do people show their head in my home before 10am for any reason, much less gender commentary!

I was nervous to see what the comments in both forums might bring, and I was not wrong.

This might help?

So there is the rest of the story. Bias exists everywhere. I am disregarded because of my gender, because of my size...people are disregarded because of just about anything. Everyone is "something" -- too fat, too skinny, too tall, too short, too white, too "ethnic..." people are very immature. It sucks.

Thank you for appreciating the abstract situation and its gravity. I feel like not enough people actually believe that words have power, especially enough power to have physical results.

Like I say to hypergeek a few comments down, there are a lots of things this post doesn't treat. The fact of many sources of biased talk and behavior is absolutely true. I'm sure we could all make lists. "People discount my desires and opinions because I am bisexual, female, under 30, vegetarian, from the south..." I wish immaturity was the problem, because that's more easily fixed than the large and small power structures in place in our society.

I wish we could just chalk it all up to men and then go live in a glorious separatist society, but I don't think that would erase the problem. Some women hurt and put down women too, and this is a source of deep sadness to me.

Sexism definitely hurts men because they are depriving themselves and others of the chance to genuinely relate to one another, women and men. Your point about inclusivity makes a lot of sense too.
