Save my computer?

Does anyone have a restore disk for a Dell Dimension 3100?

What about a Windows XP disk?

If you are interested and able to help out, please let me know. I will take your picture or give you baked goods or something really nice.

I can make you an Windows XP disk that works for Dells. If you can give me the Service Tag number, I can also look up the various chipset and hardware specific drivers it will need post windows install to get online and have proper video etc.

Do you know of what I speak by Service Tag? It's typically on a black label with white writing from Dell, and is typically a 7 character alpha-numeric. It is also often on the power supply (back top) on a label that also has a UPC symbol.

Oh... just so you know why I want your service tag:

Dell sometimes keeps track of which hardware went with which individual machine, because, alas, there are 3 or 4 different modems, 2 or 3 different video chipsets, etc. that might have been used.

I presume you have high speed internet at home? I presume that your Dell plugs into that high speed internet via it's Network Card? If thats the case all we REALLY have to worry about is getting the network card to work, and then we can download everything else from Dell's site.. but it's nice to know what's what before getting into it.

Has your trojan gotten to the point as to make your computer unusable?

After you got one last week, I found on one my computer. After a few days of strife, I used the system restore utility and sent my computer back in time a couple weeks and then deleted a whole bunch of randomness. It was frustrating as hell... but I haven't had any sight of it since. (I run Lavasoft Ad-Aware, TrendMicro Housecall and Avast Antivirus-- they're all free.)

I'm sure you've got advice coming out the wazoo... but I just know that the prospect of wiping my computer and starting over was a stress bomb for me, I can't imagine what it must be for you.

Hugs and hopes you get it sorted out without resorting to plan "put a fist through it."
