it would be cool if you could put more money on them online, but right now, you do that in person at the ticket booth in the subway. You can also use these cards to buy stuff at the kioskos around town that are equipped with the readers. What will be great is if once the buses are wired, then you could tell via something like nextbus.com when your bus is on it's way, although here in Buenos Aires it's unusual to wait more than 10 mins for a bus, so it's not that big of an issue.

Great news pbramante June 3 2009, 22:34:01 UTC
So happy to hear the news. I remember the problems we experienced with the coinage, and we weren't even there for two weeks! Here's hoping that the system will be up and running in the time promised.

at first i didn't realize that you were talking about the subway in your first paragraph, and i was like, how the HECK did you always find someone to sell you bus tickets using bills? i have a little old man who sells slips of paper for my bus (the 92), but it's hit or miss with him...some mornings he's there, some he's not. better if he's not...it's too cold out here these days for little old men!

i was just thinking about this today actually and how unlikely it will be that this will really happen in june (as i heard it was supposed to). i just find it impossible to imagine all these bus companies paying to put in the systems...i hope i'm wrong!!!

So, I have seen the monedero system in the *wild* now on two different bus lines the 8 and the 5. I think they're happening - but I'll won't be happy until it actually works!

Finalmente!!!!

Although one question... can you get a monedero as a foreigner. Last time I asked I was told I had to have a residency visa... but you know how AR is... it all changes daily. Where did you get your card?

I know friends who have gotten them without visas. I got mine because a woman from the monedero system was handing them out to people at the Plaza de Mayo subte stop about 6 months ago without *any* registration.
