Salinger is a mediocre standard for guilt-free middle-class existence.
That having been said, I've read/enjoyed both Catcher in the Rye and Franny and Zooey (guilty pleasures suck). One time in the 7th grade I decided that when I grew up I would become a hotshot film director and make a Catcher in the Rye movie. But then I pictured all the elitist assholes coming out of the theater saying "Well yeah, it was a good movie, but the book was wayyy better," and then I was like yeah, fuck that idea. So now I wanna be a NASCAR driver instead. 'Cause rednecks don't read books.
and i suppose i understand, but i like his stories and i relate to his characters and i like his writing style. and im not going to apologize for my taste just because it is supposedly shallow and mediocre.
Maybeee I phrased that wrong. I don't at all think his writing style is shallow and/or mediocre. I think the way people tend to interpret him is. A lot of people read his stuff and think to themselves "wow, now I know everything there is to know about outcasts." In that first sentence I wrote, the word mediocre was referring to most people's perception of Salinger, not Salinger himself. I just think it's funny that society likes an author who, for the most part, writes about how much he hates society.
But I wasn't referring to you at all. In fact you probably would understand his works better than most people. Sorry if I came off like I was placing you among those who use him as an excuse to call themselves intellectuals, because I would never think of you like that.
I love Salinger. I've only read Catcher and Franny and Zooey, though. But I can definitely relate to his characters as well. And I'm an outcast so I'm totally allowed to say that, too. haha.
