Yesterday when we ought to have been packing for our holiday we decided instead to go on a location hunt in South Wales - well The Forest of Dean actually.
The search was for the second stream they used in S3 E10
Cannop Ponds was our destination because Mr P had a feeling that it was the picnic location. As we drove alongside the ponds I saw one of the trees with loads of roots that is very evident in the scenes. Yes - we'd found it !! They'd filmed at the ponds again - "never to far from a parking area" - gotya !!
Now we rename 'the stream' to Cannop Brook.
We made our way down beside the Cannop Pond overflow (Cannop Brook)which is the way Gwen and Merlin walked and looked over to where Arthur looks in the mirror and where the picnic takes place.
Looking over to Arthur
Arthur's view looking over to Gwen and Merlin
Come over the stepping stones to our picnic
But for me to get over to the picnic site became our problem and for me it was a definate must do.
So hey ho back up towards the pond and then down the otherside of the brook to the narrowest part of the flowing water. Mr P made it across getting his feet slightly wet but his strides were too big for me. I had to get over there !! *panic* Nothing for it *panic* but off with shoes and socks - the water was freezing but worth every shiver when I stood where Arthur had stood and where they'd had their picnic.
We matched the trees from the screencaps _becca84 - thank you. Took the photo's - you do have to imagine a warm summers day - with wasps of course.
I couldn't get back far enough becuase of the flood water to take as per screencap but you get the idea some of the trees are there. Also the identifier is the very short tree stump on the right of my photograph and infront of Arthur.
Then came Uther and Morgana - honest the trees do match up !!
.
They ride through the centre of my photograph and there is a double trunked tree. Even think it's the same log.
Then back through the water - my feet were frozen !! On the other side behind a rock I found some of the plastic white and yellow flowers they'd used to dress the set - how good things look from a distance, couldn't believe they were still around - they're not there now, they're on my desk.
To find the location: Take the B4226 the road from Coleford to Cinderford and Cannop Ponds is signposted off this road. Follow the narrow tarmac road right down to the very end where there is a car park. This road runs parellel to the first pond. When at the end, the green area in front of you with the notice board is where I expect the crew parked. Once you've parked go towards the lake go over the bridge and turn immediate left and go down beside the overflow 'stream' aka Cannop Brook. At the bottom is their actual location. Good luck. You can look over Cannop Brook to the other side which was also used as a Merlin location which I've reported earlier.
