Ramblings of the current story that showed up in my head this morning, there are several parts missing....
Primaries are 2 brothers and a sister.
Family tradition are that all males are named William, with their use name to be decided by them at manhood (12) or when one name or another has been attached to them through their activities personality or Luck.
All Females are named Susan with a derivative made at the age of (10) or when they first become a woman (period).
Location is Unknown Planet at this point that was settled by a generational ship at least 200 years before current story. There were three classes of people on the ship.
CREW - Granted King/Leader Status of each of the outposts
PAID - Granted Knighthood/Mayor/local Leadership
CARGO - Granted no rights, and are considered as surfs initially, but some have been lifted to paid status through skill/luck/saving enough to pay their way. The main way people make this transition was due to Trade skills.
Start of story is really murky, They know their father who dies at the point that the kids are 12/11 and Sue-Anne 9. Their mother died in child birth 3 years before, Their fathers passing brought the property under the control of his Eldest Sister Sue-Marie. Who starts off her part of the story following the line of the wicked Step Mother. But after putting up with her strict training, schooling and just really odd ways. The children discover that she was just being really tough on them because she knew that when they all became adults, the challenges to their titles and land would begin and happen quickly and hard lessons were only starting...
At the Middle of Spring (May) William turned 12 and became Billy the quick.
Will is 13 and is currently the only Will in the family so didn't need to append anything to his name. He selected it as it fit him and his direct to the point look at life.
Sue-Anne Became a woman at age of 9, and she was named Anne because she didn't seem interested in anything outside of the house. And gave all indications that she would be staying on to cook, and maybe eventually grow into something.
Billy the quick is so named as he demonstrated early and often that he could evaluate a situation quickly and accurately and had a quick speech pattern that would often confuse anyone who did not know him well. He named himself after a discussion with Will, who agreed to let him take the name.
Tech Level is 1700's with a few High tech quirks added in, often referred to as Magic, but are in reality bits of technology that have become so rare that their use is beyond understanding.
The beginning of the judgment phase occurred when Will and Billy were given two odd demands by Sue-Marie.
1) Both of you are to read, understand, practice, and master everything and I do mean everything in this family guide.
2) Both of you are to start attending the County Meetings that occur once a month in a town a day’s ride away. On this she made some suggestions on behavior. She recommended that Will be reckless and argue to the best of his ability on at least one topic during the meeting and not to let it go until such time as the County Commissioner threatens him or it comes to blows between him and another member. For Billy she recommends that no matter what is said, who said it or what provocations are brought that he should sit and be basically mute and if possible blank face. The only exception is if Will is being beaten after he is down, and only then he should slip in pick Will up, and exit the building as quickly as possible and return home directly.
The events of the commissioners meeting are not established other then both boys play their parts well, and it does not come to blows, as Will is offered to shut up or be barred from the meetings for a year by the Commissioner.
In learning the family guide, they were practicing one of the arts that was shown in the guide which equated to Will being able to fire a cannon (2lb) field piece from the window looking down on it. And Billy was able to actually aim the weapon at a specific spot that he felt needed a pounding for lack of a better term, thus began the testing with the boys killing a spy who was watching the house and taking notes on guard positions, flaws and such. When the canon went off it hit the man standing in the shadows full in the chest killing him instantly. On inspection of the damage done they found him dead, and his notes next to him.
This is as far as I've gotten, and there may not be anymore or I might wake up tomorrow with clarification on parts new sections or even a better path of the story.
