Continuous theme... subtle spoilers?

Maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but has anyone noticed how almost every one of Chuck's books has a strong tie to parents? It seems like a general subject to link every book to until you think about it...

Fight Club- The obvious by-product of a dysfuntional childhood and lack of a parental influence. "Our fathers were our models for God. ( Read more... )

Huh, you're right. I never thought about that. It makes sense, though, your parents are such a big part of who you are.

You forgot Mrs. Clark from Haunted, as well... a big part of why she joined them was because she wanted to know what happened to her daughter.

Yeah, it seems whether we try to be just like them, the exact opposite or some where in between, our parents make us who we are, regardless.

I don't really have any ideas about parents and chuck, and this is totally off topic, but In Wes Anderson films it's the same thing. The main character has a problem with the father and then at the end it gets solved or it's a parental or sibling rivalry..I guess he has issues too.

I've been thinking about this since I read Invisible Monsters after Fight Club, and I realized the theme of parents-as-God-or-not is all-pervasive through most of his literature. I think its a continuation on the modernist idea of God being dead, or God not caring. The more I read Palahniuk, the more I become convinced we are still smack-dab in the middle of Modernism, not in this false post-modernism we (in the general sense) would like to think we have created or evolved to. I don't know..
