So Hanukkah as Jewish Civil War is the most accurate and most interesting view of Hanukkah (although the other themes are not unimportant symbolically and through history). My master's thesis was on the subject more generally--taking several Jewish Hellenistic texts and looking at how these Jews were both Hellenes AND Jews. Not so different from today, which is why I was interested in it. However, the conclusion of the article: "and therefore we don't need a nation-state, meaning Israel" is 1) not historically related 2) a non-sequitor and 3) bullshit. But I don't feel strongly about that.
Yeah, I didn't quite make it that far in the article (to the point where it argues against Israel, which is a kind of ridiculous conclusion). I was most interested in what apparently interested you, the split between different Jewish groups in interacting with the greater non-Jewish society.
Just read the Salon piece on Christmas with the family. That is really disturbing. Really disturbing. It goes counter to everything I believe about human nature. Ugh.
