Finally picked up China Mieville. Got Perdido Station and The Scar from the Borders @ penn station that's closing, rather sad. He's one of the authors that people are always surprised that I haven't read, and in fact I'm surprised myself that I haven't either. I was quite taken with his city-building and his garuda, being a city person and liking garuda, but his characterization leaves quite a lot to be desired. I enjoyed Perdido enough, but I wouldn't read anything else in that universe because it does indeed soud like more of the same.

Don't remember the italics, actually.

Really, you don't remember the italics? They're these mini-chapters of Garuda/various people thinking to themselves. And had it been any other author I would have laughed at them resorting to such a trite device, but I gave Mieville the benefit of the doubt.

I'm actually enjoying the Scar more than Perdido Station. For whatever reason it's less claustrophobic.

No, I honestly don't. But I read it over four years ago and remember very little of the book itself. An interesting trip while it lasted, but it left no long-term impressions except that everyone in it was immensely unpleasant.
