ooh so many things! * Bratz dolls, * some comic books..
* does she have an artistic streak? give her some comic books & some art supplies (drawing pad + pencils + markers or pencil crayons) so she can learn to draw people from comics!
* some kind of crafts kit from a place like Michaels on something like candle making or cross stitching, paint by numbers etc
erm, though i suppose all this depends on what sorta girl she is :)
I have two ready made nieces aged 8 and almost 9 and they're rather far away. It's tough to keep up on what they like.
For Christmas this year, I went to the Toy Space (which I still should write up on buylocaltoronto I know, and bought a knitting kit and a mobile kit. Neither was more than $20 and they loved them to bits.
I always throw in a few books as well, because Auntie Mags intends to get her girlies hooked on reading young ;-)
We should do that very soon. The next couple of weeks are bad for several reasons, but why don't we start thinking about sometime soon.
And if you do decide to drop by, you'd best call first. naz_toronto likes a five minute warning to put on pants. He's very shy like that. Unlike myself, as you well know ;-)
If she likes to read, great "literary" books for that age group: - Tuck Everlasting - The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle - The Witch of Blackberry Pond - The Giver - Number the Stars - anything by Kit Pearson or L.M. Montgomery
At that age a lot of girls also like pseudo-adult gifts, like a purse or trendy inexpensive bracelets or necklaces, etc.
At that age there are so many things a kid could be in to it's hard to guess.
I would either directly ask her parents what she liked, or go for a gift card from one of the big book stores or something like that. It's not quite as personal, but you don't run the risk of getting her something she already has or is just going to put on a shelf and forget about right away.

Or something like a diary with gel pens.
