Are cooking oils toxic?

May 13, 2012 19:48

I've just been reading this lady's 30 days of Paleo journal, and she mentions she started using only butter to cook in, instead of oils.  She says that basically all oils are toxic to cook with.  I've been using olive oil to cook some things in (like eggs) although sometimes I use butter, mainly for the taste.

What do you cook your food in?

butter oils toxic

I usually just use butter. I know some oils aren't good for high temp cooking but I can never remember *which* oils are the best to use in that case, so I just default to butter. I like how it tastes better than oil in general too. Occasionally I use olive oil but - and this sounds rather petty - I get frustrated at how much it spatters all over the place when it's hot. Butter doesn't do that as much.

In general I just use butter and olive oil. I threw out my vegetable oil a couple years ago. If I'm baking something that calls for oil I just substitute melted butter. (Generally this only happens when I'm making a non-paleo baked good.)

Butter and coconut oil. Olive oil can be good, just not at very high heat. Avoid corn, safflower, canola, vegetable oils, etc - they are not good for you and often rancid.

I cook pretty much everything in ghee now, but that's only because I can't stand the taste of coconut oil, sadly.

I use some oils if they are expeller pressed. Olive is alright, but I mostly use coconut oil, or butter.

I'm a bit late to the party, but http://www.realfooddigest.com/complete-guide-to-fats-and-oils/ is the most simple guide I've seen for which fats/oils are best used when (and which should be avoided).
