I'm re-reading Joseph Brodsky's "Watermark", a little mosaic of memories relating to Venice. There's a lot of stuff about memory, echo, light, dark, and distance -- anyway, I just stumbled on a line that made me think of your 'lamppost' icon. He's talking about waiting, alone in the dark, in this city he's never visited, the water all black: "At night, infinity in foreign realms arrives with the last lammpost, and here it was twenty meters away."
