Ugh

Selfishly, I'm glad you won't be going to Estrella, because that's one less reason I have to be sad about not going this year. I had such a good time with you at Twelfth Night too... I can't wait to see you next month!

Of all the companies I've worked for, all but two have gone out of business or substantially changed their business (not for the better). The two that lasted are HP and Microsoft.

I know so precisely what you mean...my half of the department lost half our people, so now the remaining 2 of us are doing 4 jobs. Unfortunately the half that used to be my whole job is also now likely being moved along with the facility I was the PM for, so I'm increasingly stuck with the lower-end and more tedious, less interesting job I took on after the layoffs. I keep thinking exactly what you said - I'm not sure I can really stand to keep doing this if this is what the job is becoming - but it's keeping all the bills paid so I'm finding ways to cope for now.

This is precisely why I'm going back to school to get into a totally different field, though - life is too short to spend 40+ hours every week doing something that doesn't feed you in some essential way and for which you can feel appreciated and accomplished. If your situation keeps going downhill, I hope you can also start considering your alternatives so that you don't end up feeling too stuck!

I think that's brave of you - good luck in school!

Today was a better day - had a very bad morning meeting that had me close to wishing for a package, followed by coffee with a colleague who helped me point my thinking about the job in a new and very creative direction. So I've told my boss to prepare herself, cuz I'm about to campaign to take my job in a direction that I know I can live with, and that I know would benefit the group. I have a great boss - she said, "bring it on, girl!" and I'm gonna!
