Body Worlds

Yesterday we went to see Body Worlds 2 at the Museum of Nature and Science. It was really interesting. The exhibit is made up of humans and a few animals who donated their bodies to be plastinated which is where tissues and organs or entire bodies are preserved by replacing the fatty tissues with acetone which then evaporates and then replacing the acetone with a polymer solution which hardens the organs. They had bodies where you could look at all the muscles

or they showed certain parts of the body like the nervous system

or you could where they had peeled back the muscles so you could see the organs underneath or they had the organs displayed individually.

For those smokers out there your lungs need some help.

It was weird to think that all these people were alive at some point and that the muscles and organs on display were once in use. What if you knew someone who had donated their body and came in and saw them on display? It would be freaky.
There are warnings which say the exhibit may not be appropriate for young children and that some may be sensitive to the material. I didn't think I'd have any problems. After all I've watched a cadaver be taken apart. The only surprise was the fetuses.

Looks kinda gross and sad, doesn't it?

The best part I thought was where they had taken just the veins of the arm and displayed them. It was cool because there were so many veins but even without the support of the rest of the body materials you could still see the shape of the arm.
