um, with all due respect. not that strange at all, as dreams go.

I didn't mean that it was a strange dream per se. Rather, it was inexplicable: why did I dream about having a conversation about a nonexistent and meaningless subject in which I have no interest with someone who means nothing to me and with whom I've never spoken? Usually, you can at least understand where some of the subject matter of a dream comes from (books you read, movies seen, things thought during the day, whatever) whereas this one was just completely out of the blue.

most of my dreams are as much about the emotional state as anything else. for example, in the dream you described, you felt expected to do something impossible. perhaps this is not from something in your psyche, like an apprehension or a memory from your day or week. perhaps your emotional mechanism just needs to practice, for a possible time in the future when you will need to feel that, and the circumstances of the feeling were invented so your logical mind could understand it (time gets rather twisted in dreams). you are riding on the edge of the state of the art, here. there are several theories about why and how we dream. the truth may even be some combination of them, or none of them at all.

I dreamed last night that I was hanging out with one of my professors from last year, and I made a joke about Jessica Simpson getting fat, and he got really offended.

Which is strange, because he's a really skinny guy. But also a critical theorist, so I guess that's why he didn't like it.
