99% cacao is tasting awesome. That other 1% is vanilla, not sweetner, fyi.
Ahh the power of the COMPLETELY sugar free diet to completely change the perspective of what is a treat.
A little background:
Normally I eat little to none of traditional cane based sugar, I made that change several years back. And I haven't HFCS since many years before that. Even before that, I ate very little sweets in comparison to veggies and the like (but then I was still eating the now infamous wheat). Like I probably eat in one year what some eat in a week, maybe even a day.
But up until now I've allowed myself to have things like agave nectar (combo of more nutrients and low glycemic- woohoo), honey, dates and sometimes maple syrup. Still in low quantities of course. And to bake I usually used some combo of the previous and/or a fruit puree (apple, pear, peach, or apple butter).
Lately though with this ongoing rash, my MD and I decided to go for the strictest yeast/sugar free diet until things clear up. And yes that includes NO fruit in any form at current. And limiting potatoes and carrots and beets.
My MD calls it sticks and twigs. Granted with a hefty side of protein. And I get to eat carbs, but in the form of who grain rice, quinoa and millet, etc.... That I am used to so no change. And then obviously no molded or fermented foods , as in no cheese (except goat which I could get by with since it isn't molded), no vinegar, no most sauces and dressing especially when you add it to my no wheat and no soy as normal day to day.
For instance the other day for breakfast I had celery, green beans and a carrot. Followed a bit later by a millet. flax and spinach tortilla. And then today for breakfast I had toast with almond butter. And for lunch lentil and ancient grain soup (it rocks), with a cucumber and some carrots.
Last time I went through this "hard core" I was still allowed ample fruit. For the past week, I have done without, following a week where I had cut everything else out, like juices and agave etc...
Oh how I miss fruit. You don't realize how eating on the go friendly fruit is or how much it balances your day. I just want to grab a banana or pear, or maybes some blueberries on almond butter toast. Plus fruit is damn tasty.
Truthfully though, and this is a good thing, I am not craving the sugar component, just the ease and variety. I think my goal is to finish February mostly fruit free (we'll see). And I say mostly because if I am truly craving something, beyond the norm, sometimes it is your body missing a nutrient, so I might give in then.
But how I long for the fruit to come back into my life, but not as much as I long for the rash to leave my body -perhaps even permanently this time, since I am that much closer to mercury free, or at least mercury lessened in comparison to off the charts! Hopefully we truly are in a "last stand" of sorts.
For now I'm going bite off a piece of 99% cacao again and savor it.
