Computer mini-crisis

Nov 06, 2010 14:57

After two years of owning my laptop (it's a Macbook Pro) without any sort of real hitch, it finally gave me a good scare last evening.  For those of you who don't know (really?) I'm a complete computer n00b and understand very little of it.  Therefore, any glitch can cause me to nearly go berserk ( Read more... )

computer, victory is mine, idiocy, ranting, aaaaaargh

I lose all composure at the slightest sign of irregularity with the computer, so don't worry, you're not alone. Apparently, two viruses were found on my machine yesterday, and though it wasn't for the first time, and my antivirus (AVG, which is really good) will have dealt with them, I was still wringing my hands. Yes. Even plain old tracking cookies make me nervous about spyware.

And these are just internet issues. If actual machinery goes awry... Oh, dear...

Fortunately, I don't have to deal with viruses (oh thank goodness, one of the benefits of working on a Macintosh is that very few viruses exist for them!)but when I had to use other computers I was very wary of the occasional glitches occurred, especially when it came to any of my family's computers! But at least you have a good antivirus program! There are so many sorts of trojan horse spyware posing as antivirus programs that I wonder how anyone deals with any of it!

Hardware is definitely high on my list of concerns, too. In my case, replacement parts are so expensive, I'd be better off buying a whole new (or refurbished) computer. D: Luckily it just seems I have a dead battery, and should be fine as long as I leave the thing plugged in. Still, makes me nervous!

My heatsink fan once gave out, and you'd have supposed I was searching for the holy grail, so difficult was the replacement to find. The chief issue seemed to be one of size. Tottenham Court Road here in London is lined with electrical and computer stores. I had my pick of them, but almost none had the right heatsink fan at all. It was ridiculous.

Ooof, and those are pretty important. Not something you want to go long without! I can definitely imagine your frustration! Something looks like it is close enough to work as a replacement, but noooo...

You'd think it'd be easier in this day and age!

When I was still in high school, and had to deal with my family's malfunctioning PC,(which they still have, oh dear gods!) I nearly lost my mind every time I had to turn it on to write research papers. My dad thought I was being an idiot, though I'm pretty certain that machine never functioned properly after the first year or so. He always used to say, "Computers won't do what you don't tell them to do! So it's your fault." XD Haha! Still makes me laugh, especially since I've seen too many computers glitch on their own for one reason or another!

Hehe, I doubt it, but it's good to know that I'm not the only one who isn't tech savvy! :D We can all be computer n00bs together. :P

I think I've got my most important files backed up onto an external hard drive... that thing is rather ridiculously trustworthy, hehe.

Luckily, it would seem my computer will be fine for a good while longer, nothing pressing. Thank goodness!
