I sympathise - I find the whole tipping thing really stressful. I find it's easier to leave a tip at the front desk, like you did. Otherwise the hairdresser is with their next client and you have to loiter awkwardly around trying to attract their attention to slip them some cash. Alternatively, if you're paying by card, you can often ask to add it to the card, like in a restaurant.
