pondering....

A good friend asked me a question today that has stuck with me for several hours now and I think I finally figured out why that was. The question was "Do you ever do anything halfway?" I guess the answer to that is no, not really. And the reason that the question has stuck with me is I realized that I can't quite wrap my mind around the idea of ( Read more... )

Well, I guess this is the time to haul out aphorisms like "the best is the enemy of the good enough", and "anything worth doing is worth doing badly."

And sometime you just have too many things competing for your attention, and you can't give any of them the time that they deserve. Sometimes, too, it's a matter of divided loyalties.

"Putting all of myself into something" is a great ideal. I don't usually manage it.

There are many things that I do by rote; I don't necessarily put my heart and soul into washing dishes or bringing in the morning newspaper.

OTOH, I can be a poster boy for immersing myself in activities to an unnatural degree. (The CD was a prime example: outfit a home studio, learn recording and mixing technique, design artwork....) Sometimes it seems like my recipe for making bread would start with "plant grain...".

I guess I have no answer except, "It depends."

It's a slightly tricky question. I also have a big "gotta do it right" streak. But I've learned, over the years, that sometimes there isn't time, or energy, or there are too many things going on. Sometimes, the choice boils down to either saying "That's good enough", or driving yourself crazy. And I'm not a fan of that kind of crazy.

Giving your all is great - if you can avoid beating yourself up when you're not perfect.
