She'd had the ring hidden in their room for almost a week now. She had no idea what had possessed her when she asked Jon for her engagement ring back, but last weekend, when she ran into him, she'd asked for it. Of course he'd given it back without question, but she couldn't help wondering just what the hell she was going to do with it now ( Read more... )

It had been a long time since Jim had seen Pam in the water, especially because it was the ocean, not the waterfall. He padded barefoot towards her, the sand warm under his feet and his hands in his pockets.

"Hey, Pam, taking a swim?" he called out once he had gotten to where the water reached his ankles. He didn't suspect anything was wrong until she actually turned around and he saw her face. His eyebrow knitting in worry, and he started heading toward her.

Pam swallowed when she looked up at him, closing her fingers around the ring again as she turned to him. She glanced down at herself, then looked back up at him.

"I don't think I'm really dressed for swimming," she replied flatly.

Jim looked her over slowly, his hand gently resting on her arm, his grip firm enough to keep her steady. The waves weren't particularly strong, but he still didn't want her to fall.

"No, you're not," he agreed, softly. "What are you doing out here?"

She shrugged and snuck her hand into her pocket, dropping the ring into it then pulling her hand out again.

"I was just um.. Thinking."

"Thinking about swimming home?" Logan asked, hands shoved deep into his pockets. "Might want to get changed into something more water worthy for that. Maybe build a raft to float on instead."

Her fingers closed around the ring again as she turned around. She laughed half-heartedly and shrugged.

"Yeah, I'm not really dressed for it, am I?" she asked as she looked down at herself again.

"Not so much. You okay?" Logan asked, looking concerned. "You look kind of..." Weepy sounded like the wrong thing to say, and Logan paused searching for a better word.

"...Unhappy?"

"I'm actually.." She trailed off, tilting her head thoughtfully as she stared past him for a moment. The corners of the diamond were starting to dig into her palm a little.

"I was just thinking." She smiled sheepishly.

John wasn't entirely sure what Pam had been doing at first, but he ruled out anything good when she turned around. He wasn't sure he was the best to deal with sad women - even if it was Pam - but he kept walking up to her anyway. "Hey, Pam. What's up?"

Her fingers quickly closed around the ring once more and she dropped her hand to her side.

"Hey, John. Um."

She shifted her weight awkwardly and shrugged.

"I was just uh. Getting rid of something."

John tilted his head to the side, considering wading in after her. He wasn't sure exactly what she was doing, but he was pretty sure he didn't want to leave her alone. "What do you need to get rid of so far out there?"

She walked back towards him, then lifted her hand up, fingers still closed in a fist. When she opened her hand, palm up, she showed him the ring, but didn't say anything.

It was the dog who noticed Pam in the water before River did, but River wasn't far behind him. Simon stood on the shore, front paws in the water as he whined at Pam. River rarely went in the ocean anymore, not since the squid attack, and puppy wasn't used to seeing his people (of which Pam was one) in the water.

"Pam?" River called, only slightly concerned. She didn't see anything like a squid around, but that didn't mean it wasn't there.

Pam turned around slowly, fingers closing around her ring as she shoved it deep into her pocket again.

"Hey, River," she replied, giving the dog a faint smile as she started walking back towards the shore.

"Hi. Everything okay? No... sharks or anything?" You really couldn't be too careful around here.

Pam nodded and gave her a nervous smile.

"No sharks," she promised. "Just.. trying to get rid of something."

"Hey, Pam," Lennox called out, his head tilted slightly as he studied her. She didn't really seem dressed to be taking a swim and something seemed strange. Off. Definitely weird. "Whatcha doing?" he asked.

"Oh, Lennox. Hey." She reached up to brush her bangs back from her face, then, once she realized what hand she was using, shoved it - and the ring - deep into her pocket as she walked back towards the shore.

"Hey," he said again, squinting a little as she pushed her hand into her pocket, still wondering what seemed weird. "What's going on?" There was something going on, but Lennox wasn't observant enough to figure out what the hell it was.

"I was just um. You know." She gestured blindly towards the water behind her.

"Thinking."
