Spoke with one of my camp kids today. She has lymphoma. She had a mass on her neck, they found abnormal cells. She went in to have the lump removed today. She got told it was no big deal. Why, oh why, do they never learn that it is better to be honest? This is a horrible thing for a teenager to have to deal with. To find out the doctors, nurses, whoever, lied to her right from the start certainly doesn't make it easier. I'm glad her mom told her and I hope she is supportive.

As for calling you, it gives you a chance to be a support, a sounding post, a caring friend. She will need those in her life. No, you can't fix it, but you can help her get through it by helping her be strong. There is a lot more they can do to treat cancer than there used to be, but many studies show that the attitude/frame of mind of the patient is a major factor in survival. To know another person cares about her may be what she needs most right now.
