Carmen Miranda costume

My most popular act is also one of my oldest - Yolanda Banana, The Banana Act. I think it is pretty special, but it is by no means a flashy, stage-filling act. It falls short for two reasons: The choreo is sloppy and the costume is amatuer.

During the last year I think I've improved the choreo quite a lot. I've been emulating simple, characteristic ( Read more... )

The top is just a simple strapless bustier - there's standard patterns available for that you can make the base layer out of, and then add a rouched top layer out of pink for that specific look.

The sleeves look like tulle. I would probably follow one of the million ways of making a tulle tutu, except make the layers really short and bunch the tulle very tightly.

That's just one way, there's a few different ways, but I think you'll get the desired effect.

I think I want to alter the bustier to be a halter top. The problem for me is setting the structure and cutting the fabric - and you're right, I guess I just find a close pattern and work off of that. Oh and I need to add a front zip, buttons... or maybe hook & eye closures. Oh fuck, I guess I can just wrap it and use snaps too! hah

Sleeves are separate arm bands (which I think I can probably handle).

I think I'm just a little terrified to cut the fabric to start, you know?

You should be able to find a fitted halter pattern pretty easily now that we're coming into summer. Just cut the pattern down the center and give yourself the usual seam allowance to allow for you to put in the opening mechanism once you figure out what you want. If you're really worried about it, buy a bunch of muslin and make a mockup before you cut the actual fabric! That's the best way to do pretty much everything.

Just throwing this out there, but if you ever run across something you really don't want to do, I'm pretty much always open for commissions for friends! I love doing pieces as opposed to full costumes, so if you ever need something, I might be able to help out. :D

Having just gotten home from Mexico this strikes me as such an odd signature act for a tiny white (WHITE) girl to do, hahaha. That being said, go for it. :~)

Girl I think the outfit in your photo is adorable, and you look fuckin killer! I'm sure it can only get better with whatever time you invest and alterations you choose to make.

Got any planned outfits w/ color themes you know of? I want to make adorable, beautiful cocktail hats and can think of no better excuse!!
