Serena calls Eric first, because she wants to be sure and Eric won’t judge her or question her. He will just quietly know. He answers on the first ring and she smiles at how happy he sounds to hear from her.
“So, I’ve just got to the sex scene in Dan’s book.”
“Which one?”
“The second one. The first one, well, I’m pretty sure it’s me. But the second one.”
“You do know its fiction right?”
Serena rolls her eyes and wonders whether Dan has been coaching him. “Well, not going by the first one. Anyway, well, I mean this girl Brooke, it’s Blair right?”
“I don’t think the characters are actually based on real people.”
“Eric!”
“It says that any resemblance to any real person is purely coincidental.”
“I’m hanging up now.”

She reads the scene again and feels as sick as she felt the first time. Logically she knows it must be fiction, they would have told her if things had gone that far. And the way Dan describes their first time, or David’s first time with Sabrina, is different to how he describes David’s first time with Brooke. She may not read a lot of books but she knows how to read a love scene and this one is filled with longing. Of unfulfilled longing. Their one was framed with nostalgia.
David had wanted this for months, maybe even longer. Maybe this is what he had always wanted.
There. That was the line that made her feel ill. Maybe this is what he had always wanted. She played the line on repeat in her head until she fell asleep.

She decides to call Nate the next day.
“Nate!”
“Hey Serena! When are you coming home? It’s not New York without you.”
Serena hugs the phone close and takes in the sound of Nate’s sweetness.
“I wish I was there. It’s just really busy here and they seem to need me so, well. It’s a nice feeling.”
“You’re needed here as well Serena. We all miss you. And Blair is worried about excessive tanning.”
Serena laughs and is overcome with shame at the same time. She has no right to feel anything other than a polite interest. She has no right. Blair and…her ex-boyfriend can do things, can have imaginary sex and she should not judge.
“Have you read Dan’s book?”
“I stopped reading after he had me sleep with his mother.”
“So you only got to the second chapter then?” she teases but feels a little bad. “Well, you’ve missed all the good sex scenes.”
“You and Dan? I can do without that.”
“No, there is another one. Do me a favour, read page 251 and call me back.”
“Or you could just summarise it for me.”
She groans in mock frustration, “Well, it’s a sex scene with Dan, I mean David and the Brooke character.”
“Wait, what? Isn’t that Blair?”
“Yes, and I just wanted to know whether you knew anything about it…”
“As disturbing as that is, I just think he’s being dramatic. I mean doesn’t there have to be one unexpected moment in a book to keep people interested amongst all the description of trees and stuff? And whenever I speak to the guy he just keeps repeating the word fiction at me over and over.”
“But when you read it, it feels,” she stops and then breathes it out, “real.”

Brooke felt different to any girl he had been with. Her legs wrapped around him, her hands sliding down his body. He looked up at her straddling him, eyes closed in concentration, teeth biting her lower lip and swallowed a cry of pain as she grabbed a fistful of his chest in her hands, pushing herself deeper. She put her other hand in his mouth as she came, gripping his lower teeth and he resisted the urge to bite. He had never wanted anyone this much.
The words lost focus and then blurred. Serena put the book down and lay on the bed. She had never done that, had never put her hand in his mouth. She wondered where that came from. Was it Vanessa?
He had never wanted anyone this much. She wonders whether she has just remembered them wrong.

She finally calls Blair after hanging up 4 times. She spoke to her yesterday but they have never spoken of the book yet.
“Hey B.”
“S! Is everything ok?”
“Oh, yes everything’s fine. I just wanted to call you, well to ask whether you have read Dan’s book.”
There is silence and Serena is not sure what she wants the answer to be.
“Yes.”
“Well, good. That’s good because there is a scene I want to ask you about.” She says resolutely, trying to sound composed.
“S…” and she can hear the quiet plea in Blair’s voice.
“No, I’m not mad B. Just confused. The scene. The sex scene. How is it so vivid?”
“You’ll have to ask Dan. He wrote it. We’re all just characters in his overactive imagination.”
“But, the thing is, it’s beautiful. It’s like the only part of the whole book that’s from his heart.” And Serena feels her eyes sting.
“S. I’m engaged to Louis. Please.” But after a few seconds she says, “ I agree it’s a well-written scene but it’s just fiction and it means nothing.”
“Blair, it means the opposite of nothing. Even I can see that. I just, I wanted to know whether it ever went that far.”
“What? No! We only kissed twice. Everything else is wishful thinking.”
“By him or by you?”
“I have to go. Come back soon?”
“I’ll try. ” As Blair is about to hang up she says, “It hurts more than I thought it would, seeing it written down, but I would get over it. Eventually.”
“They’re just words on a piece of paper. Nothing more, nothing less. See you back in New York? Don’t make me travel to the West Coast to get you.”

When he comes he chokes back the words that wants to come out and instead groans and hits his head against the pillow. He knows he is in love with her and that maybe everything that has happened has been to get him here, to this night and this bed, looking up at this girl.
Serena falls asleep with the book on her stomach, fingers scratching the words.
