Walmart is what?

So...Walmart is selling its stores in Germany...? And it sold its stores in South Korea a few months ago? What the fuck is going (maybe) right with this world?

Since moving to this back-of-beyond, I've heard many people rave about going to Walmart when they're 'out' (aka in the real world), or loudly wish that they could go to Walmart 'right now'...as if Walmart was the most marvelous thing ever invented. Personally, if I never saw another Walmart for the rest of my life...I'd be a happier person. Hopefully the Wal-world disintegrates entirely, leaving in its wake the opportunity for many small, interesting shops....I'm having good dreams, aren't I?

Are they actually selling the stores outright? Or are they selling them to a subsidiary with a different name without the Walmat stigma? Or are they just selling a majority share, but keeping a significant interest?

Walmart's whole corporate philosophy is based on market share and expansion, I have a hard time believing that they are just up and selling.

But maybe I'm wrong, maybe germans and south koreans just really hate walmart too?

*shrug* I'm not entirely sure. I haven't researched it much. It was reported in the NY Times, who said that Walmart had been losing large amounts of money in the 8 years they had been in Germany...and then mentioned the sale of their S. Korea shops as well. So who knows...?

Maybe they have to pay their employees a living wage in those countries?
