I wouldn't write her off as being a total nutjob unless you've experienced firsthand the death of a child. People tend to react strangely to trauma (and I would expect this is probably one of the most potent 1-2 punches of physical and emotional trauma out there), and no matter how much we don't like them we shouldn't fault them for it. I'm glad to see Santorum out of office, but taking shots at his family for something that we don't understand (but is actually not all that uncommon) is pretty low.
