ii. Frustrated
iii. Worried

After the ceramic shard fiasco, things returned to relative normality. As normal as they could get when you were a masked vigilante. There was only one difference.

The staring.

Daniel had caught Rorschach staring at him over the days following their return to partnered patrolling. They would go out, fight the bad guys, and while the younger man was trying to catch his breath he would feel the prickly unease of being watched.

It was getting to be downright unnerving.

So he planned to do something about it, consequences be damned.

He was fidgeting in Archie's pilot seat, his hair going on end as the staring started. He felt a muscle under his eyes begin to twitch, his grip on the steering column tightening. They had already finished their patrol; had taken down seven drug dealers in back alleys, and stopped a mugging. It had been a good night, but the staring was driving Daniel insane. He slowed Archie to a stop, ignoring the questioning sound that Rorschach made when he switched on the auto pilot. Fog surrounded the ship, hiding it from view. He stood up, removed his cowl and goggles, and glared at his partner.

“Daniel?” the man asked, looking tense.

“I can't take the staring anymore,” Daniel said, taking a step closer, watching Rorschach's immediate step back. “It's making me crazy, and can't ignore it anymore.”

His face was flushed from the frustration of it all, his breathing somewhat strained, and Rorschach was still staring. Completely silent, staring from behind swirling inkblots. Daniel took another step closer, and the other man took another step back, a few more and he had his back to one of Archie's walls, his fingers twitching, but still staring.

“Why. Are. You. Staring?!”

Incensed, breathing harsh, still sweaty from the last fight they'd had. Daniel didn't realize the sight he made, didn't realize what was going through Rorschach's head until it was too late. He hit the floor of the ship hard, Rorschach on top of him, adrenaline immediately pouring into his veins. His immediate reaction was that he was about to die, but he forced his survival instincts down, refused to move. He was completely still, they both were. His arms were spread out on the floor, his partner straddling his hips, hands gripping his shoulders. He took a deep, steadying breath.

“Rorschach. What are you doing?”

The man didn't answer, instead he leaned down towards Daniel's neck and inhaled a long, deep breath through his nose. Daniel didn't miss the way his fingers spasmed on his shoulders, or how the inhalation was followed by an almost sigh of an exhale.

Rorschach was sniffing him, and even though his armor was digging into his back, and his butt hurt from hitting the floor, it was the most erotic moment he'd ever experienced. His flush immediately changed from one of frustration, to one of arousal, head tilting to the side as Rorschach's face pressed closer against the skin of his neck, another inhale following the last.

Daniel struggled not to move. He didn't want to scare the man off by doing something stupid, like touching him. The urge was strong to reach up and slide his fingers down the man's taught stomach, to hold him in some way so that he couldn't escape.

Confusion mingled with his arousal, worry joining them. Rorschach had slammed him into the dirt the last time they'd gotten anything resembling intimate.

“Driving me crazy,” the masked man finally said against Daniel's ear, his voice gravely and low.

He felt the fingers on his shoulders tighten their grip. “Confused, sickened, by this.”

That was unusually share-ish, Daniel thought, feeling simultaneously encouraged and hurt by the admission. Rorschach was thinking about him, that was good. Rorschach was sickened by those thoughts, that was bad. Daniel strained to see the man's face out of the corner of his eye, straining until his vision became clouded over with dark colors and he had to blink away an almost instant headache.

“I'm sorry,” he said, “But we don't-we don't have to do anything. Just this is fine; it's better than fine.”

“Don't want just this,” Rorschach said, sounding deeply angered by the facts he was giving away, “Want more.”

Daniel shuddered, his eyes closing. Rorschach still had his face pressed against his neck.

“I don't know what to say,” he admitted softly. “I don't want to say something stupid - do something stupid - and have you vanish for weeks.”

He thought he heard Rorschach swallow. “Won't go anywhere.”

It was encouragement, permission to do something, and Daniel carefully, slowly, moved his arms back towards his body, reaching out to gently touch Rorschach's sides. The muscles tensed and jumped under his fingers, and he began to massage in small circles, trying to soothe them.

They lay that way for a while, until Daniel's muscles were stiff and achy, and Rorschach slightly more relaxed on top of him. Daniel shifted slightly, frowning when his partner's immediate reaction was to tense completely back up.

“Rorschach,” he said slowly, fingers still moving rhythmically, “I don't mean to wreck the mood, but I really need to go to the bathroom.”

Rorschach immediately scrambled off of him, looking for all the world like a skittish animal, but Daniel was surprised, pleasantly, when he offered him a hand up. It was an offer he accepted without hesitation, the touch lingering just a few seconds longer than was necessary. With an awkward sounding laugh, his cheeks, which had cooled, burning again, Daniel took his seat at the steering column and focused on getting them home.

He didn't mind that Rorschach stared at him the whole way.
