the lack of respect thing was the hardest for me when i was a nanny in boston. i nannied for the same family for 2 years. 2 weeks before my wedding, they "let me go." then they CAME TO MY WEDDING and gave me a gift totaling maybe $100 (i paid over $300 for them & their kids to be there). plus they just treated me like crap. but i stayed because i loved the kids. ugh.

then, after they laid me off or whatever, i started working temp jobs. i LOVED the families i worked temp for - they were great, and paid me super, super well.

hope things work out better for you in 2011. sometimes you just need to pull the plug, though. there are loads of other families that will pay you the same, or more. just go through an agency again!

aaah, I keep thinking that I should write to you because I remember you having issues with being a nanny here in Boston. It is really hard! For the last week or two I've been debating on whether or not I should get another job. The agency says there are other jobs out there but they can't help me until I give notice (understandable). What agency did you go through to get the temp jobs? That might be the way to go. This family gave me a raise and essentially took it back now. Ugh, i just can't do it anymore!!!! What are you doing now?

I went through the Boston Nanny Centre both for finding my long-term job & for the temp jobs. the thing with temp jobs is that you don't get any benefits, but you could probably get health insurance pretty inexpensively in MA as a single person. i think i paid like $250/mo for health insurance when i was doing the temp thing.

When i moved back to NY, i started grad school. Now i'm an occupational therapist. :)

good luck! let me know how it goes!
