powers, skills, pets and equipment: Mei carries few things on her. Having left her home, crossing a desert on her own, too many worldly possessions would slow her down. Most important to note is the small panda that is almost always with her. Xiao-Mei, a panda born with a condition that doesn't allow her to grow to the size of those who share her species, is Mei's most important companion. The two met one day and, sharing the similar fate of being the ones 'abandoned' by those above them, she took the little panda in. Xiao-Mei serves as a sister-like figure to Mei, much more than any other 'pet'.
Xiao-Mei has offered comfort to her caretaker and, beyond that, knows exactly what she's thinking. She reveres her master above all else and is deeply effected, as is Mei, when they are separated. Xiao-Mei's expressions often mirror that of Mei's and whenever Mei launches into attack, you can be sure that Xiao-Mei is right beside her. They do just about everything together.
Mei carries on her person knives. The numbers are impossible to count, as she has used them to set up 'mines' for Envy to step on, and the number of mines had never been specified. However, I will limit this number to twenty, five for a circle. Mei uses these knives in her Alkahestry, mostly, throwing them in five points on a circle to activate a 'remote transmutation', a very effective way of using it. This is also something restricted to Alkahestry, as it is never seen done by the various Alchemists of Amestris.
She is also able to use these knives in combat, throwing them at an enemy, or using them to slash at them in a bind. She, of course, does not do this often. It is more of a last resort.
She carries with her chalk, a couple pieces, in case she needs to draw a circle quickly. She will sometimes use her foot to dig in the ground and draw it, or whatever method is readily available, but this, too, is something she has in case of emergency.
Her abilities are quite astounding for a little girl. Mei is very intelligent for a child, able to understand Alkahestry and be a very proficient user in it, enough to teach people like Alphonse, Marco and Scar about it, while still caring the smile of child-like innocence. She is even capable of helping decipher notes and aiding in finding the hidden truth in them, the circle that Amestris had become and the circle of Alkahestry that would save Amestris from Armageddon.
Mei's ability to fight, too, is among the greater ones. She is able to easily sneak up in battle and use stealth and speed to overturn her opponents with a quick boot to the head. She can handle mannequin soldiers easily, tossing these adult-sized beings around with ease, and many of them in succession, and come out unscathed. She fights and dodges the attacks of the homunculus Envy and comes out okay. Her martial arts are nothing to scoff at, and she has no problems quickly showing anyone who crosses her path.
However, there is one thing about Mei that stands out above even all that--her prowess in Alkahestry. Alkahestry is the study of the flow of the Dragon's Pulse, the 'chi' in everything. Using this flow, those who practice Alkahestry can do things that those who practice Alchemy cannot, such as tending to wounds.
Mei uses the flow of chi in a person's body and a circle to circulate that power and seal wounds of the flesh. She can stop the bleeding of wounds and help alleviate some pain. She is limited, however, to the fact that things like bloodloss are beyond her. Mei's techniques are better used to provide immediate help and allow more time to find a more permanent solution.
The flow can be used to attack, as well. Mei will draw a circle where she stands and drop five knives into the circle. She will usually draw the pentagram within this circle. From there, she throws five more, all in a circular formation. She touches the circle closest to her with her hands and sends this 'chi' to disrupt whatever she wishes to change and alters the shape of it, such as blowing up steam engines to provide a steam cover, or turning snow into ice spikes to pierce Envy. She can do this for as many daggers and circles as she can draw. This is proven as she, from a great distance away, sits with her hands on a circle with many of hers buried beneath the snow. She expresses incredible control by following this up with avoiding harming Marco or the others who happen on them and only attacking when the homunculus Envy steps on them.
Mei can use a single circle to attack and destroy, but she much prefers the distance between her and her enemies.
Alkahestry is not simply to destroy or harm. In her first appearance, Mei proves just how useful it can be by restoring a collapsed mine into its former glory and freeing all those trapped inside, without even knowing what the materials were or how it was to look. This is possibly the aid of what they call the 'Dragon's Pulse', sensing where human life is and easily making a way for them to escape.
She often 'senses' things about people. This is a trait from all of those of Xing and Ling Yao, Fu and Ran Fan are also shown capable of doing it. Mei can sense the 'chi' of a person. When facing the homunculi or 'Father', she can sense a mass of presences, as if there are a lot of souls. She states when she enters the underground of Central for the first time that it 'feels like there are a lot of people under their feet', a collection of chi or souls gathered in one person. This is part of the reason why she is somewhat hesitant to use the Philosopher's Stone, even though she knows she must. Mei will sense what is human and what is not, even if she does not always like to.
canon history: Mei Chan was born in the country of Xing and is the 17th princess of the Xing Empire, the concubine representative of the Chan clan. The Chan clan is one of the poorest clans of Xing and, as such, Mei was pretty much a commoner, even with her royal blood. However, Mei persevered through the years, learning alkahestry and, at such a young age, being so very accomplished at it.
One rainy day, Mei was traveling in the rain when she came across a small panda abandoned by its mother. Because of its desperate situation, like her clan being ignored and abandoned the others, she felt a connection to it and took it in, nursing it back to health. This panda became known as Xiao-Mei and from that day forth, the two became inseparable, doing everything together, forming a bond akin to family. The two of them traveled, all alone, across the great desert and into a disastrous sandstorm, just to reach Amestris in the search for Immortality, all to save their clan.
Mei woke up in Youswell, a town on the edge of Amestris. There she was fed and, in return, ended up saving miners trapped within a collapsed mine. In celebration, she was invited to stay with them and was told on particular story that would help send her forward with far more earnest than before -- a goal to find the Fullmetal Alchemist, Edward Elric, who, in her mind, sounded like the perfect princess for a pure maiden such as her self.
Again, she collapsed, this time on the way to Central where she was found by Yoki, a former officer of the military and now Scar's 'servant'. She explained to him her purpose for being in Amestris and he, in turn, told her of his own 'servant', Scar. Mei remained to wait for Scar to thank him for his 'master's aid, as a way of showing her appreciation for his kindness. She demonstrated her ability and learned of Scar's brother, after noticing the strange array on his arm and how it reminded her of the practice in her own country.
Mei wandered with them afterward. Her next appearance came when Scar was in trouble. After being shot by Hawkeye and surrounded by the Elric brothers and the Military Police, she single-handedly 'defeated' the Elrics with a stealthy attack and provided a method of escape for her and Scar. During this, however, Mei and Xiao-Mei were separated. Alphose Elric had found the little panda and carried her off to safety. After hearing the story of how Mei and Xiao-Mei met, Scar offered in his gruff way to help her in her search.
During their questioning, they were surprised to learn that Alphonse had been seen with the panda. Mei, believing Xiao-Mei was in danger, immediately leapt into action, searching for the suit of armor that had kidnapped her little panda. They found the armor accompanying the homunculus Gluttony down, beneath the city of Central. Scar and Mei followed behind them at a distance.
Ever since she arrived, Mei had felt a strange presence, something 'moving' beneath the country. It became stronger as they continued to go further down. Even scared, she followed after Xiao-Mei, fighting alongside Scar against the Chimera until they finally came to the lair where Father resided, along with Ed, Al, Envy and Gluttony. There, she had been reunited with Xiao-Mei, but that elation was short-lived. Mei discovered the truth about Edward Elric and, upset, launched into a frenzy, attacking anything and everything.
She was injured during the battle with Gluttony and taken to safety by Alphonse, while Scar took a separate route for escape. She was taken to Dr. Knox, a doctor once part of the Amestrian Military who nursed her back to health. After a run in with Ran Fan, immediately recognizing her as the guard of a Yao, she attacked. It was quickly stopped by Knox.
Later, she thanked Alphonse for all his help. She mentioned how, being Ed's brother, Al must have been just like him in his body. When Al corrects her, she forms a new fantasy in her mind and Alphonse changed from an evil suit of armor to the handsome 'Alphonse-sama'.
Mei left the care of Knox with a thank you and returned to Scar and Yoki. The third person, Dr. Marco, was revealed to be the creator of the Philospher's Stone. After begging for him to tell her, Scar demanded she not seek it anymore. After scarring Marco's face to hide him, Mei did the best she could to heal him and the four headed North, to where Scar hid his brother's research notes. It was decided that Mei and Marco, the two who could possibly translate them would head by train. Yoki and Scar took a separate route, acting as a decoy.
The two of them reach the notes and sit down to decipher it, discussing the differences between 'alkahestry' and 'alchemy'. Alkahestry uses the flow of chi in everything, including the bodies, to be preformed. This is called the Dragon's Pulse and is what allows those who practice it to tend to the injuries to the body. It's primarily used in medical purposes. Alchemy, however, is believed to be accomplished through the power from the movement of the Earth's Crust and therefore far more separate from the body. Mei concluded that this was wrong and that the power she felt was not from the movement of the Eath's crust, but the souls of people beneath the ground.
They poured tirelessly over the notes, but without either one being knowledgeable in Ishvalan, the only one capable of deciphering them was Scar himself. On Scar's return, Marcoh, Scar, Yoki and Mei were forced to move to a new location. There, while taking refuge in a new building that appeared quite abandoned. There Mei finds Alphonse, Ed and Winry.
After a battle with Scar, a plan is formulated for their escape from the Briggs/Central dogs that are there to find Scar. Scar 'kidnapped' Winry while the others took a tunnel to escape the military. They were joined by a couple of chimera looking for hope in the form of Scar's notes to free themselves from their inhuman selves.
They traveled until they came across Al who had been buried in the snow. It was in the dismantling of Al's armor to carry him that led Mei to discover the hidden code of Scar's brother's research notes and the city wide circle of alchemy, and the possible solution, the one of alkahestry. After figuring this out, they again moved, this time to a village where a group of Ishvalans had taken refuge.
Following a brief conversation over Alkahestry with Al, Marco, the chimera, Scar, Mei and Al lured Envy into a trap. Using her knives and her alkahestry, Mei and the others tricked Envy into thinking that, wherever he and he alone stepped, 'alchemical mines' went off. Frustrated at this, he transformed into his real form. Envy quickly turned the tables and cornered them by capturing Marco. Marco, however, proved he was a step ahead by having a transmutation circle in his hand. He used this to destroy the philosopher stone core inside Envy and reducing him to nothing more than a leech-like creature.
Scar gave this to Mei and told her to return with it to her country. Even despite Mei's protests, they sent her back to Xing to take care of her own clan. Mei's attachment to the people in Amestris and the words of Envy persuaded her, instead, to return to Central. With no one to stop her, she fell into Envy's trap. She returned to the labyrinth under Central and was attacked by strange creatures resembling homunculi, mindless soldiers that attacked relentlessly. One of them captured the jar the leech-like Envy had been captured in and destroyed it, freeing him to take over and meld those zombie homunculi into one being, his restored form.
A short fight ensued before Mei was reunited with Scar and the others. After the confrontation with Envy, where Mustang agreed to take it on, she and the chimera proceeded towards the heart of the strange chi. They arrived in time to witness a scientist trying to force Roy into opening the Gate using Riza's life as a bargaining chip. Mei abandoned the chance to get the Philosopher's stone to tend to Riza's wound.
Mustang was forced to open the Gate and Scar opened a path to the chamber where the sacrifices were gathered, staying behind so that he could take on a dying King Bradley.
Her fight against the one called Father didn't last very long. He easily dispatched her and went on to use his sacrifices to take 'God' into himself. In order to remove the obstacles in his way, Father used a devastating blast to kill those remaining. Al used himself as a shield to protect Mei, sacrificing his armor body in the process. The two came to a decision, sacrifice Al to the Gate to give Ed his arm back. They combined Alkahestry and Alchemy to restore Ed's arm and Al was reunited with his body in the Gate, thanks to Mei.
After the battle, Mei returned to Xing with Ling, under the promise that Ling would take care of all the clans of Xing.
personality: Mei is, at first glance, an adorable little girl with her big eyes and cute face. That small panda certainly helps. But there is far more to Mei than simply childish innocence. Mei, whose clan is one of the poorest clans of the fifty in Xing, is a humble young girl, despite being one of the princesses of the country. She is very kind-hearted and is willing to step in to aid another, even if it means losing what it is she wants most. When Riza was in need, Mei sacrificed her chance to get the Philosopher's stone to make sure Riza did not bleed to death.
When someone helps her, though, Mei will respond in kind, doing whatever it is she can to repay the debt made to her. When Yoki feeds her after she has collapsed, she remains at Yoki's side until Scar returns and vows that she will go with them to Central. In Youswell, when the mine collapses, she repairs it and saves the people inside, as thanks for the meal the boy Kayal has given her. She is very honorable and will not take no for an answer.
Mei is quite protective of her friends. She can be quite sweet and adorable one moment, even crying over a missing friend, but the next, she'll become much like a Mama Panda and attack relentlessly those who have wronged her or them. She even defends those who may not be called friends, but allies, kicking Ed and Al when Scar is wounded and helps his escape as they are surrounded.
She is very mature for her age, which probably comes from the rough life she lived in Xing. Mei can handle blood and death and fighting as if it were a regularity, never blinking, tossing herself in danger without a second thought. She can be quite serious, despite her youthful appearance and, in fact, tries to act grown-up.
But Mei is still a kid and she's still got the tendencies a child would have, no matter how hard she tries to hide them. Mei tends to get emotional sometimes, especially when it comes to her friends or the things she believes in. This can come out in many forms, such as stubbornness, tears or anger. She can be quite moody, even, going from one extreme of happy to angry in the next. She is certainly not one to piss off or trick as she will probably make the floor attack you. Her level of violence depends on the offense to her, though you can be sure what she takes as offensive is very different from what another might. Such as 'beansprout' getting a glare, but when she finds out Edward Elric is short and not as handsome as her false image of him... she attacks anything and everything out of pure hate. She doesn't even refer to him by name until near the end.
Perhaps the most outstanding part of her personality is Mei's imagination combined with her ability to listen. Mei has a very wild imagination. When she first hears about Ed, she imagines this tall, handsome man who has a bright smile, intelligent--pretty much a fairy tale prince. She does the same to Alphonse, when he states he's much taller and more handsome than his brother. In her emotional states, sometimes she will hear very little and focus on what she wants. Usually when she is offended or she has entered her own mind where her 'prince' is.
