Places I have managed to apply liquid eyeliner:

- my tear duct (and, consequently,)
- that little triangle of flesh at the nose-ward corner of my eye
- my lower set of eyelashes (result of trying to 'draw into the lash line rather than above it')
- my eyelid (as in, 'curving up and across', not along the bottom edge like I meant to)
- my eyeball (don't worry, I didn't poke the eyeball with the brush ( Read more... )

-cracks up- I'm even worse, trust me. I once bought a pot of cream-based eyeliner with a little angled brush. Worst. Idea. Ever.

I never learned how to apply makeup properly (also don't have the patience to waste that much time - and money - to learn and do it regularly). At best, once or twice a year, I can manage to apply a little bit of pencil (and it usually takes at least 3-4 tries to look something resembling decent).

I'm always glad when I hear about other people who somehow got through adolesence without becoming make-up experts. It's only very recently that I've really had the urge (barring a nail polish obsession at age fifteen, but not sure that counts)...

I get that.

It's sort of frustrating because sometimes I *would* like to "fix my face up" a bit, but it just frustrates me when I try. I always feel very self-conscious and sure I'm DOING IT WRONG. Then I read all the make-up snobs about how you have to buy like the $50 eyeshadow and must buy a professional brush kit and blah blah blah and I just figure, eh, at least that's one thing I'm not blowing my money on!

Yeeeeah, it's such a take-on. I can understand that there could be a quality difference between stuff produces for tweens and stuff produced for adults, but I suspect that for most products it doesn't much matter. I mean, if I'm going to wear one nail polish colour for four days and then take it off anyway, I can't see that paying £2.99 in Claire's Accessories is that bad value compared with paying £7 for some branded version - Nails, Inc. are something like £12.50 each, I think! I got one free with a magazine a while back, and boggled when I read the accompanying advertisement feature...

Eyeliner's hard. Liquid is for the big leagues. You need a sharp pencil (but not sharpened so as to cause pain!) and to practice soft, even strokes. Think of it as shading more than drawing a line. Smudging on the upper lid is a good look, but I wouldn't use liquid on the lower lash line at all. And eyeliner itself is by no means obligatory, although I always wear it because I almost never wear mascara now but I need something to open up my deep-set eyes.

LJ ate my reply!

Yeah, I have deep-set eyes too, plus really dark rings underneath which I slightly tackle with concealer and/or lightening cream.

I'd tried a pencil (more a weird kind of thin crayon thing in a twist-up plastic barrel) but it snapped! And yeah, I'd hope a sharper one would also be better for getting a nice dark colour. The look I got with the pencil was never as sharp and deep-black as I'd have liked.

Sharp eh? I always blunt mine until I started using fat eyeliners. But it helps with the thick set look.

A eyeliner tip for you to make you eyes look bigger. Start from the outer eye and stop and trail down half way (trail or it looks like you forgot to finish) so that only half your eye is done. Bambi eyes are ago.

I fail at eyeliner, despite semi-regular attempts at gothness. Cannot use the liquid stuff to save my life, nor pencils, and find the felt-tip pen type much easier, except you can barely buy it anywhere.

I did find that using the very tip of an eyeshadow applicator sponge with dark shadow works quite well for a smokey look, though not for distinct lines.

I also have deep-set eyes, and can't see very far without glasses, so yeah - it's not just you. :)

I don't wear make-up that often anyway. At all, not even concealer/foundation. I've just... never seen the point.
