Well, I'm sick right now.  With M.'s hurt foot, we're kind of a mess together.  I haven't been able to keep anything down for the past few days.  Last night I was shivering, and just felt awful.  I guess the flu is going around here at school.  I don't know if what I have is the flu; I've never had it.  I just feel sweaty, and then cold, and week, ( Read more... )

Tell M. he can't get the flu! Or, if he does, he has to get it all through his system before he comes up here.

But seriously, I hope your immune system gathers together its white blood cells and opens a can of whoop-a__ on the flu bug.

Sad to hear about the Columbia student. He/she was Chinese? That's sad.

Here's the thread in the Spectator about the incident. I think about how NYC is this nexus that joins so many lives. In just this incident, the Columbia and UTS communities are joined in anxiety and grief. The Columbia and Harlem communities are joined in mutual suspicion. The suspect reminds panoramicgreen of similar kids in St. Louis. Grief brings a family from China abroad for a first, painful time, to participate in a funeral service to be shared with the Columbia community. How many people are made aware in this incident that "there, but for the grace of God, go I"?

There was some stuff going around earlier that lasted three weeks, so I hope you don't have that. How is M's foot doing? Maybe the best thing you can do is sleep and rest. Sometimes our bodies just rebel when we try to burn the candle at both ends. We think we can run forever on not the right fuel, not enough rest, and not the right liquids. At some point our body says, "Nope, you need to clean up, straighten up, and rest up." I think part of the reason I have been relatively healthy the last few years is that we go to bed early almost every night. I think for me getting enough sleep is very important. I used to think that I felt rotten in the morning because I had something to drink the night before. I think more often I felt rotten because I didn't get enough sleep, the "drink" just added to the rotten feeling. Take care of yourself and M. Of course today being tax day, might be enough to make anyone sick.

I'm sorry you're sick! it's that time of year... hope things get better soon :-)

The kid's arrest really kind of highlights the ridiculousness of our justice system... the kid will probably end up in jail, and who will benefit? his life will be ruined because of an attempted mugging, and maybe the jail time will keep him from trying it again, but who knows. What's the point, you know?
