Another hilarious quote

I just found this in the book I was reading:

"[The Massachusetts Body of Liberties of 1641] also contains a provision that prohibited wife beating, excepting when the husband was acting in self-defense."

That produces quite the amusing mental picture. "Well, you see, Your Honour, she had a rolling pin in her hand, and I thought...."

I wouldn't usually think this, but . . . greenhornet September 22 2005, 18:09:07 UTC
I knew a man who knocked his wife out when she, in the midst of her post partum depression, attacked him and her baby with a knife. I think that was justified and even warranted.

Yes, of course--I definitely agree with that.

I just thought the law was funny, considered when it was written and how it was put.

The argument goes that we have evolved in today's society because wife beating went unpunished in the past. Thus the traditional family is discredited. Somehow I think this law shows how wrong those people are!

Right! It's just interesting that they would put the self-defense clause in the wife-beating law. ;)

I can see that. So they should have prohibited husband beating as well. That way they could argue over whether he/she started it.:D

Ah, but you see, if one marries a very tall, strong lady one could get hurt otherwise.

Hm, Jake married a very tall, strong lady...but then, he's much taller and stronger than I am, so he's ok.

*grins* At least if Jake started beating you, you could put up a pretty good fight back, right? ;) I wonder if there were a lot of complaints back in the 1600's of wives attacking their husbands.

How tall IS Jake, btw? I know how tall you are, and he's still so much taller!
