I can't tell if he's thinking about the battle or about his elbow, but either way it's a fascinating image.

He doesn't usually look this gritty, either. That's neat. ;-)

Yes, I'm aware of the fact that a lot of what I think I see is made up in my head. He can tell us for sure, it could be his elbow, it could be "I wonder what's for dinner?" It could be "If I don't look directly at the camera, maybe he'll go away."

And yes this photo and the other one of this moment with Lak in it both show them in a very gritty way. I give credit to the rain and mud and lack of shaving.

I didn't post them all but there is a sequence of photos that lead up to this one. And it's followed by the look she gives me in the first photo in this post. The reaction I saw was her recognition that I was snapping away at her, and he face when she closed her eyes was, I believe, a "O god make him stop" or a "Why do I invite him anyway" kind of face. But having noticed the nutcase in the back, I leave room for the possibility that she was reacting to him or both of us. The other people are most definitely reacting to him. That much I know.

Jake saw this and said "That's Colin" Impressive for a not-yet-two-year-old.

I'm assuming he liked the ones of mommy and daddy too.

I do really like this picture, but I have to admit that I think I was pissed about my knee hurting and having to stop.

Your narrative is better.
