We should talk. My wife is on staff at the Opera (has been there 24 years now) and can fill you in. Heck, if you want to observe a show, she can get you backstage at SF during the season. She might be able to bring you backstage at Festival Opera in WC in August too, if the timing works.
You don't need to be licensed to do hair at the Opera - you aren't cutting, just putting on and taking off wigs during the show. Maybe a little bit of styling, but probably not until they get to know you. Makeup ranges from easy to complex.

Yea, we were just told that we don't need to have a license. We've been shown all the basic make-up faces and basic age make-up, it helps that I've done a lot of theater and ballet.
I'll still have to go through the cattle call auditions no matter what to do the hair (that and and I want to see what they are like) but I would totally love to watch and see what its all about.
Dancing comes in increadibly handy. I've gotten countless free desserts from dancing to the music playing in restaurants. (I suppose your ticket beats that, but still...)
