This sucker's 100% pencil tool, ma'am. You could do something like this after a half hour of practice.

I understand how to use the pen tool now, but it's a pretty time-consuming tool, so I only use it when a really mathematical line is called for.

Found a neat texture photograph, greyscaled it, layered it on top of the stuff I did in Illustrator, and then just noodled around with opacity and layer settings until it did something cool.
