Fairy Tail is a guild of mages located in the kingdom of Fiore. As a guild of mages listed under the Magic Council, their task is to fulfill quests which can only be solved by magic and help people out! Only, they don't really help as much as they destroy! This is why Fairy Tail has a bit of a reputation with the Magic Council. They still get the job done though, so it's all good! The ends justify the means!
One of these troublemaking mages (all of them are actually troublemakers so... singling out one is pretty hard but I will try my best) is Gray Fullbuster! He isn't as strong as the other mages of Fairy Tail as he isn't recognized to be an S-Class mage yet (that means Really Powerful), but he is strong nonetheless!
Gray is an ice mage. That's a fancy way of saying alchemist. He learned how to use ice magic when he was a wee boy at the age of wee. When he was a kid, his whole village was destroyed by a demon named Deliora and he was the only one who survived the attack. He was found by a lady named Ur and her student, Leon. Ur took Gray in as another student and he started learning ice magic then. The three of them would train way up in the coldest of mountains with only their underwear on. As such, Gray had developed the habit of stripping (consciously or unconsciously) anywhere and everywhere even up to the present.
When Gray had gained very small knowledge of ice magic, he attempted to fight Deliora again. Ur had to step in and sacrifice herself to be able to "defeat" Deliora though. She used the forbidden spell of ice mages, "Ice Shell" to encase Deliora in a giant ice shell (well, duh) and bye, bye, Ur. After this, Leon and Gray started being even more angry at each other and went their separate ways. Gray joined Fairy Tail and Leon probably went somewhere to be homo and stuff like that. And it was supposed to be all "happy fun times" there, now that he was part of a guild, but little did he know that his past was going to haunt him! Dun dun dun.
Gray had gone out to follow Natsu (main character) and Lucy (other main character) because the two of them went on an S-Class mission! That's a bad thing, by the way, since they're not even S-Class yet and they stole the quest from the ~*~second floor~*~ of the Fairy Tail headquarters, and that floor is only for the S-Class mages! Gray tried to stop Natsu and Lucy from embarking on the mission like a good guild member but he ends up getting beat up by Natsu, falls unconscious and wakes up on a boat with Natsu and Lucy. Eventually, they end up at Galuna Island, where the mission takes place.
The mission was to "get rid of the moon", because the inhabitants of Galuna Island were cursed and would transform into monsters at night and they blamed it on the moonlight. When Team Natsu explored the island though, they discovered a large block of ice which brought back so many memories of Gray! Apparently, the one responsible for the curse of Galuna Island is the block of ice and the one who plans on using the ice-- Leon! Dun dun dun. Lots of showdowns happen and Gray gets his ass kicked by Leon, and then they get chased by a giant rat, and then another match with Leon! Gray manages to defeat Leon, but Deliora's seal breaks. Gray attempts to use Ice Shell but is stopped because apparently, Deliora has been dead already because of the seal! Ur's memory fades away because the ice had melted, and Leon becomes a good person. Or something. Yaaaaay.
After that Gray-centered (sort-of?) arc comes more misadventures with Team Natsu. Gray gets a personal stalker named Juvia, he gets chosen to be Fairy Tail's representatives in fighting the Dark Guild Oracion Seis (hello, Rave Master) together with other representatives of the three other guilds in the new Guild Alliance. In this alliance, he meets his old classmate again, Leon. Leon had joined a guild already, following what Gray had suggested to him back in the Galuna Island arc. Teamwork is shown and they brave through everything like manly men who wear nothing but their underwear. And then more misadventures.
Personality-wise, Gray is... well... pretty (shounen) retarded, much like all the other characters in the series! He is easily angered and likes to fight! He is considered to be Natsu's rival with fire and ice being on opposite ends all the time. Speaking of ice, ice is supposed to be cool and stuff like that, but Gray totally isn't! He's a big ball of awkward and is pretty stupid when it comes to romantic advances and stuff like that. He's got his mind set on accomplishing his goals, whatever those may be, so if it's not something that overlaps with those goals, he would totally be oblivious to it all. When not being retarded, he is usually seen being really cocky and sure of himself. That, or he is making stupid jokes. Really, really stupid jokes. Much worse than Teddie's. Seriously.
Anyway, as already mentioned, Gray is very headstrong once he's made up his mind. Something that he holds very deeply is Fairy Tail, and its concept of "nakama". Everyone in Fairy Tail is "nakama", so they have to stick close together and always support each other no matter what. That's where Gray's loyalty to Fairy Tail and its members stem from. Even if him and Natsu always fight with each other over who's better, when push comes to shove, they'll do anything to preserve that concept of "nakama". So, if something is going to risk the name of Fairy Tail and everything it upholds, Gray would do anything and everything in his power to prevent that from happening-- and since he's pretty retarded, he'd do anything even though he knows he'll lose his life for it.
Gray isn't as simple minded as Natsu is, and would do things the more logical way. That is saying something if you're in Fairy Tail. An example would be that one time when the guild's headquarters was destroyed by Luxus and they all had to rebuild it. He was only carrying one pole...? of wood and Natsu was carrying a bunch. He mentioned that Natsu was being stupid for doing something like that, but gets agitated when Natsu calls him weak, and then he joined the stupid party.
Abilities include stripping in public and ice magic-- more known as Ice Make. Basically, it's a form of alchemy where you turn stuff into ice! And not just any kind of ice, ice objects! Like shields, swords, giant pow hammers, stuff like that. Gray uses his two hands for creating ice unlike his classmate, Leon who only uses one. Gray is by the book when it comes to his form of Ice Make, and uses his two hands because the ice is more balanced that way, compared to when it is done with only one hand. His Ice Make isn't that slow or anything, and he can create anything in a snap, compared to how it's shown in the anime where there's a really long sequence and pfffft. There's not much about it though, except that he can make a lot of things out of it, but he can freeze even something that's at the boiling point already. Of course, he's also pretty handy with hand-to-hand combat.
