Exactly. I came to this conclusion myself a while ago. We expect politicians to solve our problems, but our problems are so deeply rooted in the culture, in who we are as a people, that the solutions are beyond the ability of mere politics to solve.
We blame politicians for running up the national debt, but how many Americans display fiscal responsibility on a personal level? How many Americans are capable of drawing up and sticking to a household budget? How many Americans tolerate any delay in their personal gratification? Our whole political system is predicated on a base level of personal responsibility on the part of the individual citizen, and we lost that a long time ago.
