Summary: Set roughly 10 years or so into the future. He has somehow managed to hold on to the two things he loved the most, but for how much longer?
Note: This is looking rather long at the moment!! I'm gonna put it up part by part I guess. It's not quite long enough to be a multi-chap but it's a very, very long one-shot. Maybe longer than my previous multi-part one-shot? 8DD;; Made it into a multi-chap because eheh. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this. It has a sorta different vibe/theme from what I've written up till now? Inspired by the song
Landslide, I'd recommended listening to it while reading through the entire fic. It really pushes the mood along.
He's whizzing down the snowy mountainside, wind in his hair, adrenaline pumping through his veins. Around him, the view blurs out as he speeds past. Ever since Inoo had introduced him to snowboarding, his trips to Hokkaido have become a yearly tradition.
Everything feels amazing. Until he hears his name being called. Puzzled, he turns around to face the wall of snow tumbling down behind him. His blood runs cold. His eyes search for the voice that had called out to him and he spots her way up on the mountainside, waving frantically before getting swallowed in the avalanche.
He screams her name just as her head disappears into the snow and raises an arm painfully slowly--as if someone has hit the slow-mo button on a video player.
The wall of white hits him.
He wakes, arm half raised above him towards the ceiling.
Dawn was just breaking and there is enough light in the room for him to look around. Everything is in its place. He lets out a long breath and swipes his hand over his face, taking along with it the thin film of sweat that had formed on his forehead.
It's the 4th time he has had the dream.
He turns to his right and sees her back, hair splayed out behind her, her shoulders moving slightly with each breath. He shuffles closer and wraps an arm around her waist. He breathes in her scent deeply to calm himself down.
She's here. Everything is fine.
She stirs, but almost instinctively snuggles in closer. As he counts her breaths and heartbeats, he falls back into a light slumber, ignoring the fact that he would be woken up just about half an hour later by his alarm clock for work.
He just needs a moment to know that she's still around. Still in his arms every night. Still his.
