obama opens exploratory committee for 2008 democratic nomination

for the first time, more women are living without a husband than with one

(wonder why nothing was said about gay couples. statistically some of those women must be living with gay partners.)

good quotes:
“For better or worse, women are less dependent on men or the institution of marriage,” Dr. Frey said. “Younger women understand this better, and are preparing to live longer parts of their lives alone or with nonmarried partners."
(although it plays into heteronormative, and a bit of the age-ist societal structures)

“This is yet another of the inexorable signs that there is no going back to a world where we can assume that marriage is the main institution that organizes people’s lives,”

i also liked: "a research group in Washington described the shift as 'a clear tipping point, reflecting the culmination of post-1960 trends associated with greater independence and more flexible lifestyles for women.'"

and

“Marriage kind of aged me because there weren’t options,” Ms. Terris said. “There was only one way to go. Now I have choices."

i hear so much about obama as a person, but i can't recall ever hearing about his position on issues.
it makes me worries that politics is just a race of the best PR, ruled by "moods" and "images" carefully created and associated with candidates by some ad-exec-genius

on the other hand, i want to know more, because from what i have heard about obama seems encouraging. perhaps, he will actually surprise me and be strong and clear in his position on the issues.
damn, i really hope so.
