there are two things in modern american society that are in need of demystification: sex and money.
money maybe even more than sex.
now you can even talk about sex at the dinner table.

i am very interested in the social significance of money. of the idea of working, selling your time and talents, your labor and your self, for a price. of the ( Read more... )

i spend about $900 a month in total. maybe $1000 to accomodate trips to the ATM.

$400/month for rent.
$76 for metrocard (hoping to bring that down and begin riding my bike once again)
$50ish for electricity, water and internet, split four ways
$100/wk for everything else, including probably $80/week on food.

i eat out almost never, and buy premium foods- primarily local and organic or better, almost always.

I can understand $800 on food though. a couple decent dinners out per week, a few trips to the overpriced gourmet supermarket, and daily lunch and or breakfast out of teh house, and that's what's up.

cool blog idea

i'm guessing fancy restaurants. go out for a $100 meal every other week or so, especially if you're treating, and it can add up fast.

yeah, that's about what my expenditures look like.

monthly:
rent $330
student loans $200
metrocard $76
cell phone $50
utilities $15 (split three ways, and we don't pay for internet)
netflix $12
misc. including food ~$400

...and when i'm working, i get 2 or 3 meals a day paid for. and occasionally my metrocard.

when i'm not working, i will eat out or go out for drinks maybe once a week. (this is more than usual, to include dates.) even then we're talking about a splurge of $10.

thanks for writing about my blog, especially in the context of the interesting ideas you bring up in your post. after reading the comments I figured I'd chime in about my food spending! :) Yes, it can be $800 and more in a month where I eat out a few times. But it's usually less.
About $3 a day for breakfast comes to ~$100
I buy a sandwich or salad most days for lunch, so that is maybe $175 a month.
Dinner at a restaurant with appetizer, entree, wine, dessert, tax and tip is easily $40 per person in NYC, and often much more, so if I did that 4 times a month that would be another $160
Then maybe buying a bottle of wine once or twice a week is maybe $75 a month
And then the rest of the groceries I cook at home... the total often works out to around $600 a month, sometimes more, sometimes less.
I'm definitely not the world's most frugal person but a lot of people in NYC eat out and order takeout for every meal, so it could be much worse!
