so, i don't know about you guys, but i've been looking for years for deodorant that's not full of scary, cancer-causing ingredients. i've tried many commercially available natural deodorants, none of which, well, work.

i found this recipe for homemade deodorant online at one of my new favorite blogs. and since i've take the week off to recover ( Read more... )

Damn! I was all for trying it myself until I came across this part:

Will it keep you dry? absolutely not. I sweat buckets and always have, so I am used to it.

I wish that could be something I could get used to, but I know I couldn't. I guess it's death by Dove for me.

actually so far it's been keeping me very dry. i've been surprised. it's like 90 degrees in my apartment and i've been sweating like a pig, but for the past 16 hours or so my pits have been dryer than with normal deodorants.

it's the baking soda and the cornstarch!

if you decide to try it, let me know...i've got tons of cocoa butter and some shea left over. all you'd need is your own essential oil blend. (we wouldn't want to smell alike, would we?)

maybe i should have a deodorant-making party!

another option is cornstarch baby powder (not talcum powder), which will keep you dry and thereby not allow the odor-causing bacteria to proliferate (they need a moist environment).

but yeah- yay for diy stuff! i have been doign some bike mechanic work on my ride out here (affectionately named the batmobile), and started a little garden and replaced the broken lcd screen on my iBook with a not broken discarded screen from my friend dan. next up is installing and running linux of an old computer- wish me luck.

and hey-right on josie!

I've been shampoo and face wash free for months.
It rules.

do you just use water?

i've definintely been interested in trying this...but with my crazy frizzy curly out-of-control hair and tendency to break out...i'd be hesitant.

No, for my hair I usually use a combination of baking soda, white vinegar, tea or apple cider vinegar. It changes depending on what my hair is doing. There's a community called no_poo and the posts are tagged by hair type so I imagine you may be able to find something suitable for your hair. I know that some people you soap-like bars, or shampoo without 'cones' but I'm not very knowledgeable about that stuff ( ... )

cool. thanks for the tips.

just this week i've been checking out the ingredients on most of the products i've been using for the past ten years or so, and i've been shocked. i've been doing some research on substitutes, and i'm contemplating a couple of shampoo bars (from here: http://www.chagrinvalleysoapandcraft.com).

i've heard of ocm but never tried it. i've been using jojoba oil as a moisturizer for awhile now, and it's made a huge difference for me. but i'm wary of giving up chemical acne products entirely- i had problems for so many years and they've only recently started to go away.
