wow. That was amazing! I wonder if I knew the names of the candidates at that age. I clearly remember clinton winning, but wow.
Also... so my sister takes her kids to vote with her and teaches them about voting and what it means and such (similar to how it seems the people in the video did), but she moved to washington about a year ago and in washington (state) they only had 2 counties in which you could go out and vote like that (the rest were absentee), and those 2 counties are turning absentee, and she was really bummed about not being able to make a day out of it as they had done the last time (although she still sat down with the kids and were like, Ok! We're voting now! and such... but not quite the same...). I thought that was a bummer.
i have strong memories of going with my mother to the polling place (the school around the corner from my house). i never got into the booth, but there was a miniature voting machine for the kids to play with, and i remember looking forward to the day when i was old enough to cast a ballot.
i remember "voting" in school, but i couldn't tell you about the candidates. except they had mock presidential debates and chantal reyna played ross perot with giant fake ears and a ridiculous accent.
i think i remember asking one of my parents (probably my dad) on election day why he voted for who he did, and he said "because we're republicans."
i remember that. him saying it like it was hereditary. like my dad was a republican cause his parents were republicans, and one day i'd grow up and be one too.
A couple weeks ago in the back page of New York magazine, which I think is sort of the "found art" section, they had snippets of posts to the Nickelodeon website. I think the Nickelodeon heading was something like, "Kids Pick the President!"
The posts ranged from the absolutely adorable, like, "The only way I'd vote for John McCain (if I were 18) would be if I was under the imperius curse!" to the absolutely cringe-worthy "Don't vote for Barack Obama! He is friends with the terrorists responsible for 9/11!"
