stumbled over from applyingtograd...

a ton of what you said in this entry reminds me of myself. The family stuff. The cluelessness about grad school and no people to turn to irl. The desire to do more. The skint life and loving it and also hating it, but not because of materialism. Not wanting to necessarily be a professor as the end-all-be-all goal of grad school. Your list of requirements for locations sounds similar to mine. Even the detail of having done basically nothing when applying to undergrad.

Anyway, I just finished the applications season... 3 fully funded acceptances. I'm not in your area (i'm in the humanities) but figured I still might have wisdom from going through this process that could help you. And you seem cool : ) is it ok if I friend you?

ps
uc irvine visual studies seems really great. (it's not la, but it is a shitty part of socal...)

Sure. I don't really post much here anymore, but maybe I will in the future? I'm in a funded M.A. right now, hoping to apply to Ph.Ds next fall, so it's always good to hear more from people who have gone through it!

also, i don't care what people say about poor grad students... becoming a grad student is going to increase my annual income by more than double.

the only other thing i will say wrt money for now is DO NOT pay for a masters' degree. oh, and there are (almost) no funded masters' degrees. sucks, but is true.
