KATELIN NATALIE HARVEY [KAT]

&& Call Her Black Mariah;;

On the burned records I am ”Kat”.
But now they call me The Black Widow
I’ve seen twenty six years pass by.
Word on the street is I’m a criminal
They’ve seen me out and about with The Joker
They called my world Batman

&& What If You Could See;;

Above the ground my head stands five feet four inches.
And those damn scales always say one hundred and thirty pounds.
When they write about me they say this:
FACE
Kat’s face is delicate and feminine for the most part, with sharp cheekbones and a small upturned nose. Her eyes look a little big for her face, sometimes giving her the appearance of being surprised although she usually remedies this by holding her eyelids low over her eyes. Her lips are small, full, but the tips barely stretch beyond the width of her nose. Her hair is a deep, almost black, brown with a soft wave to it that reaches just beyond the base of her shoulder blades although it is more often than not pulled up into a ponytail. However, for all the delicacy and femininity of her features she can do nothing to hide the ugly scar on her right cheek, a large slightly curved X which, due to it’s proximity to her eye socket, could have easily resulted in the loss of her eye. Even seven years after the incident it remains red and raised. She also now has centimetre long scars on each side of her lips.
BODY
For a small girl Kat is pretty heavy and it’s nearly all muscle. She was a gymnast until they decided she was too tall and too heavy, and even after that she kept up her gymnast exercise routine. It’s resulted in a fair bit of lean muscle across her body, although there is a large build up in her legs where she carries most of her weight, giving her chunky thighs. Her upper body seems a lot bonier, giving her the appearance of someone a lot lighter. Her collarbones stick out and her bone structure means that the base of her ribcage sticks out in two points just below and equal in size to her small breasts.
STYLE
Kat has a sense of classic glamour about her, even when she isn’t dressed up. Perhaps it’s the classic makeup- a slick of blood red lipstick and neat eyeliner on the upper lid. Perhaps it’s the fact she usually smokes with a cigarette holder to “keep the smell off her fingers”. Something about her screams vintage even when she’s wearing pants and a tee shirt.
During the day she is often seen in something classic, black wide-legged pants to balance out her thighs and a fitted tee shirt. At night when she’s working her style changes just slightly, mostly she just changes her trousers to something more closely fitting, making it easier for her to move. Although sometimes she likes to vamp up in a simple blood-red dress.

&& Everybody Knows That You’re Insane;;

These are the things that make me smile:
[+] Pain
[+] Honesty
[+] Affection
[+] Music
[+] Puzzles
[+] Blood
[+] Killing
[+] Winning
[+] Torture
[+] Freedom
[+] The night/ darkness
[+] Playing games

These are the things that make me frown:
[+] Her reflection
[+] Being treated like a prostitute
[+] Being locked up
[+] The Batman
[+] The police
[+] Rudeness
[+] Liars
[+] Loosing
[+] Mirrors
[+] Being reminded that she’s insane
[+] People staring at her
[+] Bugs

Here’s where I come in handy:
[+] Good with knives and torture, frighteningly good in fact.
[+] Gymnastics training has left her incredibly fast and agile. Not superhumanly so like catwoman or other such characters, but quicker, more agile and more flexible than your average citizen. She’s also pretty strong thanks to all that muscle.
[+] Very good at reading people. If she studies them closely enough she can figure out what most people are thinking or what their emotions are.

This is where I stay back:
[+] Not very good with electronics at all. She just about wire up a simple bomb and basically work a computer, beyond that she is useless.
[+] Not very good at threatening people. Partly because of her build but also because she doesn’t understand how normal people’s minds work.
[+] Jokes. Kat has little to no sense of humour outside her own insanity which makes her giggle.
[+] Concentrating. There are just too many things to think about! This means that she is also fairly easily distracted.

We all have our quirks, these are mine:
[+] Clicks her teeth together, most frequently when she is thinking, although she will do it at other times as well.
[+] Likes to play with knives when she is bored.
[+] Carries a lighter around with her which she will frequently light and extinguish when she is bored.

Sometimes, I dream too...
[+] Kat used to have dreams of being an actress or a performer in a stage show, she lost them when she was scarred for life. Now she doesn’t have any dreams or ambitions any more, she just likes to cause havoc.

It makes me quake in my boots:
[+] At first sight Kat appears to fear nothing. The threat of death doesn’t phase her and she relishes in the idea of pain and torture, at first even the Joker couldn’t find a way to scare her.
[+] Her only real fear is being locked up in Arkham Asylum. No one knows why and she isn’t ever going to explain it to anyone.
[+] Although she doesn’t fear him directly as such, Kat is afraid of what the Batman could do to her - namely send her to Arkham. She very rarely shows it however, unless he gives her a direct Arkham threat.

This is what the Psych Evaluation read:
(pieced together from records from various institutions and facilities)
Psychotic. For the most part Kat is completely and utterly insane, although she slips between states of insanity and total lucidity. She can go from making no sense to sounding like the cleverest person in the room. In a lot of cases she is one of the cleverest people in the room. She is a very intelligent young woman, although whatever madness has taken over her brain hides it most of the time. She is not to be underestimated.

Masochistic. Kat is a masochist. In other words she enjoys pain being inflicted on her. This is a quality she had before she went insane, she enjoyed small things such as being spanked and scratched, but that the insanity intensified ten fold. Now she is not phased by even suggestions of extreme violence towards her, such as braking bones, and often go so far as to seem excited by the prospect. She is similarly undisturbed by the thought of death, her only comment being that she would prefer to “go out in style” if possible and that traditional state executions are “so boring and old hat”.

Murderer. Kat is a cold blooded killer. She could be described as evil. She engages in acts of murder and particularly cruel and unusual torture methods without any signs of remorse. She seems to enjoy the act of torture and inflicting pain on other people, going so far as to try to find new methods of torturing and eventually killing people in the most painful and lengthy ways possible. Although she also appears to enjoy a quick kill she seems to prefer that it has some degree of forethought to it. Most of her pleasure seems to come from pain, receiving or inflicting, and she appears to have no other motives for her crimes than this simple fact.

Honest. One of Kat’s better qualities is that she is honest, almost alarmingly so. This does not mean that she will not lie, she will readily do so to protect people she feels some connection to (this is rare) or to play with the heads of those around her. This latter reason occurs more often when she is showing signs of being in an insane stage, although the honesty is present in both states. She does seem to prefer to be honest, refusing to hide behind the moniker given to her by the press and giving what is assumed to be her first name when questioned.

Analytical. Kat is a highly analytical being and a deep thinker, throughout tests she appeared to be constantly thinking both about the question she had been asked and many of the various tangents that could be taken from that question. Her brain activity was also high when no questions had been asked. This analytical ability also seems to be the reason she can read people’s emotions so well. It was found to be very hard to lie to her as she could read what people were really feeling and thinking from their facial expressions and body language after only a few moments. A negative effect of her analytical nature appears to be that Kat shows very little sign of any sense of humour.

Childlike Kat appears to be a highly childlike being, almost as if she has regressed back into being a younger version of herself. However at the same time she has a distinctly sexual air and often seductive nature which leads to the assumption that her childishness is merely a ploy. Her moods change so often and she finds fooling most people and tests so easy that this is hard to judge, there are moments when it could be believed she really has the mentality of a child. And then there are the times when she seems out to seduce every man and woman in the building. She really is a complex subject.

&& I Was Killing Before Killing Was Cool;;

Glad to see Richard and Louise don’t know what became of me.
Gotham City is the town I call home.
The little things that make us who we are:
Most parts taken from records, others taken from Kat herself.
Kat had a normal childhood, the only child of loving and hardworking parents who raised her well. Her childhood was average, she was neither rich nor poor, and found she had plenty enough friends to get along with.

(Institution Note: This is the most that can be pieced together about Kat’s early past. She refuses to talk about it to anyone. This information was only learned in small fragments after many, many hypnosis sessions. It is uncertain whether this is all true, although we assume it to be so.)

At the age of eighteen she received her scar. She had gone outside onto the streets to smoke a cigarette when she was approached by a large man who propositioned her, thinking she was a prostitute. The man refused to listen to her when she told him she was not. She says that he repeatedly asked for ‘just one kiss’ all the time she protested. When she tried to move away the man grabbed her and dragged her into an alley where they couldn’t be seen. Here he told her ‘I’m going to give you a kiss and make sure you never work again’ before carving the X (a symbol commonly used for a kiss) into her cheek, something which could have resulted in the loss of her eye. After this incident she returned home to her parents who made sure the wound was taken care of. This is a story she appears to relish telling to new people, drinking in their reactions as she does so, although it also seems to pain her to re-live the incident.

She states that after this incident her mother and father never looked at her in the same way again. She also likes to assure people that this isn’t the reason she is the way she is, perhaps some odd way of trying to protect her parents?

When asked why she thinks she is the way she is she likes to tell another story. She tells us that after the incident with the X when she went out a night she started to carry a blade around with her. One night she was just walking down the street when she spotted the man who had made her ugly forever, so she started to tail him. Remembering the knife in her pocket. Eventually she saw him heading into an alley with a protesting girl. She followed and stopped him, knife in hand. At this part she likes to go into great detail about how exactly she tortured and killed the man, suffice to say it took a long time and he was very much dead by the end of it. Once an apprentice asked why she didn’t become a vigilante hero after saving the girls life, he never did write properly again after they pulled the pen out of his arm… She also clearly stated that she found she enjoyed the experience. It can only be assumed that this means the story is a true one and also the start of her life of crime, although that would still leave it unclear as to why she is psychotic.

(At this point Kat would like to state that of course that was the start of her life of crime and that her story is one hundred percent true. She would also like to say that she has never met a psychologist who knew what they were on about and that they are vague for this reason and so shouldn’t be paid.)

Kat had moved out of her parents house and after this incident she embarked on a life of crime. At first she left no sign of herself at crimes, starting with small-time things. Getting involved in gang beatings, despite having no part in gangs. She states that in her life she has also carried out three murders as a hired assassin/forceful interrogator and it was after the first that she committed her first and so far only act of arson. She destroyed the building containing all the records, including every record of who she is and whom her family are. This was presumably to protect them from mob hits and to make her incredibly hard to trace. She is now a woman with no history apart from that she will tell us neither is she registered on any missing persons list.

During the Joker’s first reign of terror in the city she lost both of her parents. Her father was killed by the Joker himself after attempting to stand up to him and her mother was killed in one of the large scale explosions rigged by the Joker. She shows very little remorse for her parent’s deaths her only comment being that “they died in an interesting way; hopefully I’m going to go like that too”. This has left her with no ties to anyone, and seems to have only strengthened her complete disregard for herself and the law although as she was killing before their deaths they are not a deciding factor in the evolution of her psyche.

She is now a free-lance killer. Working for no one and killing whomever takes her fancy at the time. She currently works on a rate of only killing one person at a time, although others are often left maimed in her fight to reach her victim. She is known to leave behind a calling card of a red lipstick kiss on the right cheek, whether this is on purpose so that she can be recognised for her crimes or just a force of habit is unknown.

(Kat would again like to interject to say “of course it’s on purpose you imbeciles. I may not be after fame or money but I will not have other people claiming my kills. What I do is an art and a science, carefully planned and skilfully executed. I want recognition for that, even if no one knows who I really am.”)

&& Somehow This Hell Is Home;;

Author’s Notes: Kat is one of those characters that you tell people about and you can just see them thinking “oh god she’d gone mad.” She wasn’t originally written for the Batman Universe, she was just an experiment to create a real bad character. I’ve written bad-ass kids before but no one who was a real criminal.
Then Kat came along. Evil. Psychotic. After I’d written her I realised she was like the bastard love child of The Nolanverse!Joker and Drusilla from Buffy (something I blame in part on watching The Dark Knight). Hence she slipped into the Batman Universe. I wanted to write how I could picture her and the Joker reacting to each other, for this purpose her history has been tweaked a little. Outside the Batman universe her parents weren’t killed by the Joker, but they are dead.
She was always going to be tragic ;)

I love this character so bad. I probably need help.
She’s the perfect villain. Seemingly unafraid of anything, completely insane and merciless. She’s just so refreshing to write!

Ps. I have no idea what her mental condition is. It seems a little like multiple personality disorder, but I’m not sure it is as both her lucid and insane sides are capable of acts of horrific murder and carry all her traits. Really the only things that change between them are how childlike she is and how her intelligence level is perceived. If anyone knows I’d be eternally grateful, the way the brain works is very interesting to me.
