I have no idea whereas it's been genetically modified, but in the kind of world we live in I wouldn't be that surprised if it was, and if everything was done to hide it.

I hadn't really considered that aspect of the problem, I expect they had done the research and experimentation in complete secrecy (bringing into existence something that could now easily be turned into a bio weapon of mass destruction). Does this mean scientists can no longer be counted on to fully consider repercussions of their work? Tee hee, is there a need for some sort of international "don't do dumb ass science stuff" research approval panel now?

It has been genetically modified (there's no debate on that), I just think it would be nice of the medical community were to assure people that it's not showing up outside of research labs seeing as the whole situation is very public and kinda creepy. I'm assuming copies of the papers detailing how to make the "super bird flu" were made, emailed, possibly stored on dodgy usb drives, etc. etc; How do we know that information has always been secured? Worse, what if it has already shown up in the wild and we're not being told?

I think that as long as you "play" with that kind of knowledge, it is bound to "escape", one way or the other... I might be pessimistic concerning that matter, but I honestly don't think that any kind of research involving modified organisms is safe (in the sense that at one moment or the other, it will be released, whether it's the scientist fault or not) ...

I don't think you're being pessimistic, just having more wisdom than arrogance :)
