So, as many of you know, Amy and I were supposed to be moved out of Baltimore by the end of this month and setting up shop in Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill/Cary/Wake Forest/etc. Well, that hasn't happened, and we're here for another year. I'll explain why.

I got my info from the departmental pages... description of the PhD degree, faculty profiles, course descriptions, etc., lol. They have some language courses and people, but nowhere near as deep as any of the six schools I listed... nor do they have entire concentrations in linguistics. (I checked all the way back to 1998).

The thing is, the other schools are MUCH stronger in linguistics than UNC and Duke are since they dedicate entire programs of study to it. They offer a lot of coursework in more areas that interest me beyond the basic history of the language, grammar, or phonology. If I were to study at either UNC or Duke, my specialization would have to be in literature, by default.

I appreciate the help though.

Hmmm. I have a question. Do you want to be a professor? Conduct research? What are your goals with the degree?

Sounds cool in any case. And I wish you luck in the application process.

Yes, I'm looking to be a professor, and conducting research is almost certainly part of the description of a professor's work. Beyond that, I just really enjoy this stuff. :P

And thanks. :) I'll try to keep everyone posted a bit more often than I have been.

Dude, when God tells you something, you gotta listen. It sucks but it's usually for the best. He sees a lot farther down the road than we do. I am in that same place. All we can do is fill up the water pots and see where God leads next.
