A Post I'll Regret Later

An old friend came to visit, down from Chicago. She and her fiancee are trying to convince me to move up there. Maybe I will.

I like Tennessee. I think it's beautiful, and I think the people are friendly. I just...feel kinda restless. It's hard for me to find people I can identify with, collaborate with, talk with. Everyone's friendly, sure, and ( Read more... )

All your criteria are met by San Francisco. It's not even a big city...it's a mere 49 sq. miles and has less people than greater Nashville. And a lower crime rate than Nashville.

I *was* one of those girls who was Wiccan because it wasn't Christian. I got duped into feeling like I had to believe in something. Now I am a secure and happy atheist, because dammit, I don't need to believe in some imaginary person in the sky just for belief's sake.

Yeah, San Fran is at the top of my potential list. (It even fulfills the unwritten criteria of housing someone I actually KNOW) It's just kind of expensive, innit?

It is and it isn't. Housing is expensive, but if you can deal with roommates you can manage quite well.
Also, income is higher here - minimum wage is $9.36

Gas is expensive but you can skip having a car altogether (it's often easier not to have one), and it's only $45 a month for a bus/subway pass.

Energy is expensive, but you don't need air conditioning in the summer and won't need the heater much in the winter.

Sales tax is about the same as Nashville (maybe 1% lower?), and you don't pay it on groceries. We have a state income tax, but it's tiny. I pay about $50 a year. You get a tax break if you rent and if you purchase bus passes.
