Well, a few years after getting distracted by something shiny and forgetting all about it, I've decided it was time to give my old game Swear a proper release. Swear is a version of the classic worm game, played in non-euclidean space, that is to say, on the surface of various three-dimensional shapes ( Read more... )

Vertiginous!

But I do see an odd bug: if the only pointing device I have plugged in is my Wacom tablet, I get an error dialog that says

Software failure!
Guru Meditation: install_mouse() failed

even though the game doesn't actually seem to use the mouse for anything. (Dual G4 Quicksilver 2002, OS X 10.4.3.) It's an issue with the Allegro port, I'm guessing.

The speed is just fine on my Mac; in fact, I wish there were an option to increase the display resolution.

There's actually a file requester (that's very ugly) that uses the mouse, so I guess that's why I kept that in there.

Also note that I noticed there was a bug in the first version where the default controls are a bit weird. I updated the files, but if you ran the old one, you might want to remap the controls on the options page to something saner. (The default is supposed to be left-right-up-down).

I was going to ask why the default controls were sideways. I figured it was just cussedness.

Oddly, if I do plug in a normal mouse as well, the tablet works fine with the file requester. It just can't be the only device plugged in at startup.

Hunt mode is awesome, though admittedly some of the surfaces like the Spiral are way too hard to play that way. For me, at least. But Hunt on the Klein bottle is a nice challenge.

I once set up a slow-moving starfield, and then played in Blind mode, and I went completely insane.

Well, not really, but I got this very strange illusion of falling that I've never experienced before.

Some combinations of settings can definitely induce motion sickness. The surfaces where you can pop discontinuously over edges jolt my brain too badly for me to play them very long; manifolds only, thank you very much.
