I'm not sure what I'd have done in that situation. There is such a fine line between joking and going way overboard like this guy did and hurting someone.
I mostly worked with older ladies, none of them that knew or could handle knowing about me. Once we were at lunch and all of them were really running gay guys down. That was rough. Someone, I think what you went through was rougher.
I think in the end you made the right decisions. I hope you get transfered. You really don't deserve to be in that kind of environment.
by no means am i closeted, but i just havent ever felt the need to disclose that information to him. i also dont work there often enough to really delve into my personal life with anyone. i am rather surprised that he hasnt figured it out yet.
i have never worked with people that were homophobes before, so i really dont know how to handle it.
im going to florida for a pastry conference which just happens to be in the same part where my gramma lives. and it just so happens to be during her birthday!
I guess I am closeted, especially at work....there would be way too many issues arise, that I just wouldn't want. Still, I don't really hide who I am, so I am surprised only a couple of people figured it out.
I'm sure I didn't handle it well. I just ignored the conversations for the most part. Occiasionally I chimed in with a few remarks. Like "just because a guy is gay doesn't mean he's going to go around raping little boys" and "just because a guy is gay doesn't mean he finds EVERY guy attractive."
:D So you get to see your grandma on her birthday!!! Great. give her a hug for me(though you don't have to tell her that). And I really hope you enjoy yourself!
if i lived and worked where you have i would have been closeted. fortunately i have always been in places where it is acceptable or at least a non-issue.
i often have to tell people that straight men are 99% of the time the child molesters, then women follow. gay men, i believe, are one one-thousandth of a percent of the people who are child molesters. (that'd be 0.001%)however, people are ignorant and ignore these things.
i will be seeing my gramma! i am hoping to go swim with the manatees with her, but we shall see how that goes.
